About this deal

Billy wrote this autobiography via dictation, and the result is that it perfectly captures Billy’s voice. It’s impossible not to read this without Billy’s Glaswegian accent in your head. It has a wonderful whimsical ramble to it that is equal parts endearing and laugh-out-loud funny. It has been a long time since I regularly had to pause reading because it was making me laugh until tears rolled down my face. On 30 December 2007, Connolly escaped uninjured from a single-car accident on the A939 near Ballater, Aberdeenshire. [43] 2010s [ edit ]

Billy says: "Being a Rambling Man was what I always wanted to be, to live the way I damn well pleased. I've met the weirdest and most wonderful people who walk the Earth, seen the most bizarre and the most fantastic sights - and I've rarely come across something I couldn't get a laugh at. I don't think I've ever had a bad trip. Well, apart from in the 1970s, but that's a whole other story..."

On 11 July 2001, Connolly was awarded an honorary Doctor of Letters (D.Litt.) degree by the University of Glasgow. [90]

Connolly's banana boots, designed and made by Glasgow Pop Artist Edmund Smith and a regular in his act during the 1970s, are now on display in the People's Palace in Glasgow. [27]

En route to begin filming Water (1985) in Saint Lucia, Connolly drank an excessive amount of alcohol on the plane. Upon arriving on the island, he had dinner with the cast and crew, including Michael Caine.

In the book Billy (and in a December 2008 online interview), Connolly states he was sexually abused by his father between the ages of ten and fifteen. He believes this was a result of the Catholic Church not allowing his father to divorce after his mother left the family. Because of this, Connolly has a "deep distrust and dislike of the Catholic church and any other organisation that brainwashes people". [53] He has called himself an atheist. He writes about changing baby's 'nappies' [diapers] without qualms and that "It's a joy to release the baby of this burden." He goes on further to write about his appreciation of toddlers as "the craziest people. They change their clothes six times a day, and they ask you the nicest questions." In November 2019, The Glasgow Times named Connolly as The Greatest Glaswegian as determined by a public poll. [103]
