About this deal

The orange handle midway along the shaft activates the blade, pulling down on the handle slides it down the shaft, closes the blade and makes the cut. For shorter trees and bushes, look for telescopic tree pruners with a maximum extension length of around 2m, and a shorter setting closer to 1m . These heights will provide sufficient versatility without requiring the use of a ladder. The internal rope pully system is what assists with closing the blades and causes them to cut. Instead of a squeeze handle, which is what many other tree pruners have, this method is easier on the hands. It’s quite a revolutionary way of cutting, and sets the Fiskars pruners apart from others on the market. The rope is external, and I believe it will likely fray after prolonged use. I found that the rope sometimes caught on the branches; I never had this problem with the Gardena Starcut 410 as that had an internal mechanism.

The grip at the end of the handle is also an actuating ball which can be pulled to close the blades and perform a cut. This way both hands can hold the pole pruner at the very end for maximum reach, and one hand can pull on the orange handle at the base to work the blade action. Quite innovative! Telescopic tree pruners also come with some nifty features that make-work so much easier. These features are not common in all models but it is normal to run into them in other models. Just for the sake of size comparison, I leaned both the longer and shorter versions of this pruner against the wall, and the size difference is phenomenal! The long, extendable pole pruner at its shortest, collapsed length is 2.4m (8’), compare to the shorter fixed length pole pruner which is a mere 1.65m (5.5’). Incidentally, the new updated model is available both lengths, choose whichever length is more suitable! Product Assessment This Wolf-Garten model uses a 4:1 pulley system which makes pruning larger branches possible without having you use too much effort. The pole that comes with the lopper is adjustable, from 1.7m to 3.0m in length. It doesn’t have a gearing or ratchet system, so you must use brute force to cut through branches. I’m quite strong, but after prolonged use, even my arms got tired. Fiskars UPX82 PowerGear X Tree Pruner, a super-sturdy and lightweight, ergonomically-designed pole pruner for easy cutting in all directions The Draper Expert Telescopic Tree Pruner is a lightweight pruner that extends to a respectable 2.5m to accomplish most tree and bush pruning tasks in the domestic garden. Its price fits most budgets yet it’s still a quality model. Wolf Garten multi-star RC-VM Professional Tree Lopper (closely followed by the Fiskars UPX86 long reach pruner)

Pole pruners are versatile pruning tools which provide extended reach, allowing gardeners to access tree canopies and dense bushes to trim overhead branches without needing a ladder, or to trim inaccessible dense growth at ground level without bending or kneeling. Unless you want a workout, sore arms and painful shoulders, I suggest you buy lightweight pruners if possible. Holding a heavy pole above your head isn’t an issue if you do it once but could be painful and awkward if you’re doing it all day. 4) Consider a telescopic pruner with a saw attachment

Remember that the further the pruner is extended, the harder it’ll be to control and use safely. Therefore, it’s best to only extend the pruner as far as necessary, depending on the job. The pole is very easy to extend to a maximum of 3 m, making this tool suitable for taller trees. The blade can be removed from the handle if you want to use it for handheld pruning. Other pole pruners use an external rope attached externally to the cutter head to activate the blade, which can tangle in branches, and requires one hand to hold the rope, leaving only one hand on the pole. With a rope-free design and a sliding handle on the shaft, this allows for more precise two-handed control and more power when making the pruning cut. The idea is that when the sharp cutting blade slides past the flat, blunt counter blade below, the blunt side may crush the part of the branch it’s pressing against, while the sharp slicing blade wont. If the part of the branch being cut off get crushed a bit, then it won’t matter, as it won’t be attached to the tree and will be thrown away.

Tending to your plants is essential in maintaining their health and it gives you the opportunity of enjoying a lush garden. Pruning removes dead or damaged stems from plants before the next blooming season approaches. This permits the trees to develop healthily and look their best. Instead of relying on a ladder to get to those high up branches which can be a little dangerous, a telescopic tree pruner is an excellent way to safety prune branches you otherwise cannot reach from ground level. Figs on the other hand have soft, pliable wood, which cut cleanly and didn’t jam in the blades. The big leaves of fig trees tend to obscure the cutting head, making it hard to see, but the bright orange blade support made it easy to see where the cutting jaws were, whether the light was dim, or looking up almost into the sun where the glare made it hard to see clearly. Since long reach tree pruning can be a physically demanding task, it’s crucial to consider the weight and ergonomics of the pruner. Look for lightweight models that won’t strain your arms and shoulders during prolonged use. Ergonomic features such as cushioned grips and adjustable handles can significantly enhance comfort and reduce fatigue. Testing the pruner’s balance and maneuverability before purchasing is advisable to ensure it suits your physical capabilities. Blade Quality and MaintenanceLooking at the other side of the cutting head, we can see the bright orange blade support which increases the visibility of the blade when it’s high in the tree amongst leaves, making it easier to locate the jaws of the cutting head around a branch. When cutting tree branches overhead with a telescopic pruner do not stand directly under the branches your cutting! I know this sounds a silly comment to point out but you will be surprised how complacent you get with overheadcutters. Safety first! In the picture below, we can see that the newer model (at the top of the picture) has a larger plastic body attaching to the shaft, and the long orange blade support which helps place the blade onto high branches and see where the blade will make the cut from a distance away. The handle extends from 1.37 m to 2.5 m, so you can neaten up hedges as well as tall trees. Weighing just 1 kg in total, it’s easy to use these pruners comfortably for long periods of time. The Draper Expert Telescopic Tree Pruner is a quality garden tool at an affordable price. It’s built with professional gardeners and landscapers in mind as well as the average domestic gardener.

In general, pole pruners come in two sizes. The shorter fixed length pole pruners are around 1.6m (5.5’) long, and are perfect for managing smaller trees up to 4m (12’) tall, whereas the longer telescopic pole pruners, which extend from 2.4m to 4.0m (8’-12’) long, can reach up to an incredible 6m (18’), but are a bit too long and unwieldy for smaller jobs. The cutting mechanism is geared to provide additional mechanical advantage, making cutting up to 3 times easier than with standard mechanisms, allowing for effortless and exact high-level pruning. Instead of allowing free adjustability between its lengths, you can only one of three positions: no extension, half extended or fully extended. Therefore, there are some limitations.Prune your tree branches and straggly high bushes safely with a long reach tree pruner. The products in our review are in a range of prices and extendable lengths to meet most people’s needs, from gardeners with just a few trees to look after to professional landscapers. Whether you choose to lop off your branches or to saw them, do it safely. The UPX86 long reach pruner has a whopping extra long reach of 4 metres fully extended, allowing for most tasks a home owner might need to do before calling out a tree surgeon. Add 4 metres to your own reach and it’s possible to reach 6m with this extended tree trimmer. Of note is how easily the blades chopped through the branches; I didn’t need to use much strength due to the gearing system, which increases the pressure on the wood by a factor of twelve. The long 47cm blade is curved to reach around the branches and cut sharply. The telescopic handle extends to 2.5m which, when you add in your own height, gets quite high up into your trees. Although this is a lightweight long reach tree pruner, it can feel a little heavy when fully extended as you move it around. Pros To see if it was possible, I completes the whole pruning job, including some very small, precise cuts at the tips of the branches, using only this tool alone and nothing else. Realistically, you could probably make 90% of the cuts in any pruning job with this tool alone, and use a pair of hand secateurs for the finer work.
