About this deal

The turning point was getting a pair of the long Warmbacs big enough to wear some liner socks under to stop the chafing - been toasty ever since! We prefer ordinary socks in warm weather because they breath better, but if you like dry feet all year or sail in a cool water area, the thinner waterproof versions may be for you. I have mentioned many times on this site that my family and I moved here so I could cycle year round. The WP socks keep the feet warm by limiting the amount of water flushing through - more like a wetsuit some days.

Staying barefoot til you've registered, had your credencial stamped, and found your bed will easily do the trick. I like winter sailing; not just the shoulder seasons, but also the wash-the-frost-off-the-deck cold of January and February. My only criticism was the longevity, they seemed wrecked by the one run but I took them back and got a replacement pair with no hassle. But I guess it would depend on the individual and the terrain - whether the membrane in the sock is more under attack from your toenails or sand/grit getting into the shoe from outside. But like others, I've got a couple of pairs of Sealskinz that I use for running in the winter (I 'normal' pair and a merino pair).V.P (Water Vapor Permeability index) of 65% and has been tested to withstand a column of water (hydrostatic head) >10,000mm. With Dexshells the waterproof lining will eventually start to leak, but even then you just get damp feet, rather than wet, and your feet remain warm. But, it drives me a little crazy that newbie hikers/backpackers (common on the camino boards) are still immersed in myths and outdated info about footwear and hiking/packing norms.

I guess it only takes a pointy grain of sand to work its way in through the outer fabric to puncture the wafer-thin membrane. Also, I know some people like to layer a very thin nylon sock over their wool sock when it's wet, but that's too much for me, personally, and might be for you with the breathability. Sealskinz are great for walking, for which they are designed, esp in boggy terrain and when using cold wet boots with a clean dry pair of sealskinz - perfect.I hardly ever wear boots any more, and have completed 50+ mile hikes multi-day hikes in my beloved Merrells.
