About this deal

The daughter of Hendrik Christiaan Bonger (1828–1904), an insurance broker, and Hermine Louise Weissman (1831–1905), she was the fifth of seven children. She is not the slave to his legacy that a brush through history' might suggest, rather that she rose above her own reticence and social pressures to put Vincent on the track to being who he is today. Her perseverance paid off in ways that no-one could have imagined, and Vincent’s work was finally given the spotlight that it deserved. Van Gogh", of the doctoral dissertation of Caroline Smailes [25] A one-woman show by actress Muriel Nussbaum, Van Gogh and Jo was performed at Fairfield University in 2005. This book offered a fictional glimpse into the life of Theo’s wife- her past, present and the future she sets in motion.

Her marriage to Cohen, a depressive who preferred solitude, was challenging, and Jo confided to others about its difficulties.Lei, donna di fine ottocento, è stata una dei pochi ad aver compreso il talento di Vincent e ad aver lottato assiduamente perché questo fosse riconosciuto anche dagli altri. I felt her characters were portrayed so well they became so vividly alive and literally jumped out of the pages and I could imagine them in my mind when reading. Until Jo and Theo marry at sixty percent of the way into the book, the story is fictionalized and unfolds as a historical romance starting with Jo arriving in Paris under a cloud of shame, hoping to be an artist. This a fascinating story about an amazing woman, who is largely responsible for the promotion of and subsequent fame of Vincent Van Gogh's art after his death.

This is a stunning and incredibly colourful portrayal of the Van Gogh brothers and the woman Johanna Bonger who tried to keep it all together in this mad and mesmerising world of artists and dealers. The Parisian streets, cafés and clubs leap vividly from the page and I loved spending time with Johanna, her brother, and the Van Gogh brothers too.

Le prime 100 pagine sono infatti molto lente e molti fatti sono romanzati, ma compaiono spesso soggetti che sono realmente esistiti, come Camille Claudel e Paul Gaugin. Without Johanna's dedication to the cause of exposing Vincent's art to the world posthumously, he would have remained obscure. However, it is important to remember that this is a dramatised version of events, and not everything in this book is fact. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

It was the same well of emotion, and overwhelming feeling of awe and appreciation that swells within me every time I see a piece of his work in person, and it’s a feeling that I will never fully be able to explain. It starts out with Johanna, supposedly an aspiring artist, arriving in Paris to live with her brother. With her marriage, she ceased running her boarding house and moved with her new husband and son to a nearby house, specialy designed by the Dutch architect Bauer. Vincent's paintings inherited from Theo's estate remained hers, and those belonging to her son Vincent Willem were also separate. Caroline Cauchi has a great way of telling the story and it left me wanting more from Caroline Cauchi.I want to say while reading this novel, I truly felt the agony and ecstasy of Mrs Van Gogh and Vincent’s profound struggles. With over 6 million of the world’s best eBooks to choose from, Kobo offers you a whole world of reading. Johanna was sent to Paris to stay with her older brother after being dismissed from her teaching post. She became custodian of Vincent's work after the death of her husband, Vincent's brother, not long after his death.
