About this deal

Later I discovered it had once belonged to wealthy Jews, and had been confiscated during the Nazi occupation.

The result is a monolithic retrospective that takes us from the humble beginnings of a shy child sitting at the back of the class, to fearless pioneer, conquering and subverting the art world with boundary-pushing performances, and concluding with her most profound personal experience to date. Her extraordinary work across a number of media is very personal, maybe spiritual, certainly political; its subjects raise questions rather than provide answers – about intimacy, war, mortality, mourning, delusion, illusion and time itself.

The definitive guide to the life and work of Marina Abramovic, the world’s most famous performance artist. Her work - notorious for its feats of endurance, pain and intense physical encounter - has pushed the boundaries of contemporary art and cemented her reputation as one of the most significant artists of the past 50 years. Likewise, although Abramović is famous and highly visible (Time magazine named her one of the world’s 100 most influential people, alongside Barack Obama and Pope Francis), she is aware that her investigation into all the dimensions of presence requires the absence of her own ego.

Young people could never get an apartment for themselves, so every flat would contain several generations—the grandmother and grandfather, the newlywed couple, and then their children. I remember my grandmother saying that when my mother left home to join the partisans, she left behind sixty pairs of shoes, taking only one pair of old peasant shoes with her. A Changing Places toilet is located on Level 1 Royal Festival Hall next to the JCB Glass Lift, for the exclusive use of disabled people who need personal assistance to use the toilet.

Funny enough I don’t think I’ve really read any art memoirs except that a couple of weeks ago I read Marc Chagall’s memoir. A breathtakingly intimate journey, we are led across deserts, oceans and cities to explore extreme highs and lows, all the while marvelling at how Abramovic approaches every success and setback with her signature humour and wit. From her early childhood, she explains her upbringing and really installs a feeling of sympathy from the word go. But once during a German advance she came down with typhus, and was lying unconscious among the badly wounded, with a high fever and completely covered by a blanket. You can pick up a copy of Walk Through Walls here on Book Depository, or The Museum of Modern Love here.

A very impressive biography, loads of experience and events all of which turn out to be symbolic and meaningful projects. But nothing could quell her insatiable curiosity, her desire to connect with people, or her distinctly Balkan sense of humor—all of which informs her art and her life. Even as she was beginning to build an international artistic career, Marina lived at home under her mother’s abusive control, strictly obeying a 10 p.

Over 600 images from Abramovic's personal archives set these captivating memories alight, creating a fascinating, visual landscape and demonstrating the inextricably intertwined nature of her life and work. It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance.
