Also, I just want to clarify that I don’t mean “without my vagina” like I didn’t have it with me at the time. Her dad, a taxidermist thought it was perfectly normal to make a hand puppet out of a dead squirrel and wake up his daughters in the middle of the night to surprise them with his creation. I pointed out that perhaps he’d been named that because he was the man who’d invented walls, and she sighed impatiently, pointing out that it would be hard to believe that a man had invented walls when most of them couldn’t even be bothered to close the bathroom door while they’re using it.

You’ve inspired me to blog again, and to enjoy writing again, and let it all hang out honestly, and you seriously just rock! Just wanted to say that A) you are awesome B) though I follow you on Twitter and read the Blog, it was a tweet from a Canadian publisher which led me here, which, as a Canadian, I find kinda awesome (see A) and B) how do manage to find yourself amongst so many whose work I admire? I used to do art therapy, but my rheumatoid arthritis is so bad now that it's hard to draw sometimes. Lawson discusses how she knew she grew up in a very strange home environment from a young age with a father who was a keen hunter and taxidermist who often presents them with wild or dead animals as gifts. Her blog gets thousands of hits a day, and there are a ton of videos online of her giving public talks, making conference appearances, etc. My father was one of those soldiers at the time, and when my mom told me this story as a teenager I pointed out that perhaps she should have appreciated my getting him off the streets like that.

I may be drunk or stupid (well, I’m actually both) but, when does the book actually come to my local Indie bookseller? When I read these stories to friends I’m always shocked when they stop me to ask, “Wait, is that true? As both author and narrator of this offbeat memoir, Jenny Lawson employs a unique style that is both funny and off-kilter. I burst into uncontrollable laughter when her dad insisted that the turkeys running amok in their front yard and scaring the mailman were quails. Although still hilarious, I could identify (either because it happened to me or someone I knew) with your stories and didn’t find them particularly surprising or “what-the-fuck”ing.Author’s note: My editor informs me that this doesn’t count as a chapter, because nothing relevant happens in it. I am now considering “Animals Behaving Badly: Boozing Bees, Cheating Chimps, Dogs with Guns, and Other Beastly True Tales. Let’s Pretend This Never Happened: A Mostly True Memoir is a poignantly disturbing, yet darkly hysterical tome for every intellectual misfit who thought they were the only ones to think the things that Lawson dares to say out loud. If I'd have been thinking I would have left some Woolite and my delicates by the sink for him to rinse out, but you never think to turn your pet raccoon into a tiny butler until it's too late. And when the supposedly funny bits are starting to feel forced it really takes away from the reading experience. For every intellectual misfit who thought they were the only ones to think the things that Lawson dares to say out loud, this is a poignant and hysterical look at the dark, disturbing, yet wonderful moments of our lives. There are photos interspersed throughout the book, and I couldn’t stop laughing at a picture of a very large metal chicken standing outside the front door to her house with the caption “knock knock, motherfucker. Jen Lancaster: You appear to have a soft spot for dead, stuffed creatures, particularly if they're clad in bowler hats or acting out a scene—please explain. Unlike Broken which focuses on Lawson’s journey with her mental health, this memoir focuses on her childhood and from the very first page it was absolutely hilarious.Morgan found herself pregnant with Clara at seventeen and doesn’t want her now sixteen year old daughter make the same mistakes… This is soon put in perspective as their lives seemed to crash after the accident. I read it again and again, but mostly because my ADD-addled mind can’t help giggling at the pop-up characters when I open it up. I say this without a hint of exaggeration: She may be one of the most progressive women’s voices of our time. From eggs of rattlesnakes bursting to turkeys following the girls to school and Jenny getting her hand in a cow’s vagina, there is never a dull moment in the book!
