About this deal

juliet milagros palante is the fat and asthmatic puerto rican lesbian you never knew you wanted to read about.

I feel Juliet’s story is one that is powerful, one that is necessary, and one that everyone can take something away from. This story interrogates the institution of feminism and queer spaces, especially when both of those tend to privilege white voices and bodies. I received a copy of the book from Riverdale Avenue Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This graphic novel talks about casual racism, it talks about how reverse racism doesn't exist, it's about how white people will so often overstep and speak over people of colour when they are trying to help.we got to explore not just what it meant for juliet to be a lesbian, but also what it means to be a lesbian of colour living in a world that seems to want to put her down. But within the course of this novel, Juliet starts dating someone else and it is a really beautiful development.

She literally said she didn’t think she said anything wrong or mean about Juliet and I couldn’t believe it. But as a Puerto-Rican American, who also identifies as a lesbian, she's not sure Harlowe's book makes room for her experience as a queer woman of color. I could not stand Harlowe Brisbane or her damn book so I almost DNF’d this after chapter 2, but I am glad my sister pushed me to keep going because I really loved it. So, when Juliet experienced something similar, I felt Juliet’s tears all the way back to the cruelty of that moment and how much it affected my relationships with other queer women for years.Es una exploración hermosa de la experiencia queer y de la identidad de género a través de la perspectiva de una chica latina de color. I admit, I was extremely afraid at the beginning of this book, because I felt like the feminism that was described was only meant for white cis women, and I didn’t want to find this kind of bullshit in this book. I adored this ❤︎ there were issues that were pointed out in such a short story that is relevant until today even though the original novel was published some 4 years ago. There was this one scene where Juliet is humiliated and made to feel small because she doesn’t know everything—or even much of anything—about being queer.

During this internship she gets introduced to a super diverse group of queer people and finds a queer space to belong for the first time.

So, like, I’m free but your whole entire life has been gutted and everyone you know is either dead or indebted to some gringo corporation? Juliet Takes A Breath is adapted from the novel by Gabby Rivera - a work I unfortunately haven’t had the opportunity to read as of yet, however this did not impact my enjoyment of the graphic novel at all - it stands strong by itself. After recently picking up Juliet Takes a Breath in novel form recently, I was so excited to hear that a graphic novel version was being released, so of course I jumped at the chance of reading an arc. I think it's important book that offers so much visible spaces for lgbt+ youth and especially queer women of colour.
