The man behind that famed dram was George Smith, a tenant farmer on land belonging to Alexander Gordon, Duke of Gordon.

By the 20th century the vast majority of the distillery’s production was going for fillings but in the 1970s Glenlivet once again began to market itself as a single malt, especially in the lucrative US market. But behind the mass market consumer success lies a distillery with a colourful story and a fine tradition for more exclusive malt whiskies.Multi-award winning and recommended as far back as the 1820s when King George IV asked to try it during a trip to Scotland, it’s easy to understand why The Glenlivet remains such a household name 200 years later. The Glenlivet 12 Year Old Single Malt Scotch Whisky is a legendary expression that has become renowned worldwide.

Two popular choices for easy mixing include club soda or ginger ale, or you could also mix up The Glenlivet into more intricate cocktails like the ones below. Either way, this long-standing brand can be traced back through centuries and is one of the few distilleries that has remained relatively open throughout that entire time period. It presents an exceptional combination of flavours and aromas that make it a true classic in the whisky world. Selective use of these casks provides a smooth, creamy sweetness that mingles harmoniously with the delicate flavours and complex fruity tones already present in the whisky. Cocktail recipes: Taking inspiration from both a Pisco Sour and a Pina Colada, a Carnivale is a summertime special in the world of whiskey cocktails.

Unlike many other brands that couldn’t take the financial stress of having to close during the war, The Glenlivet popped back up almost instantly. If drinking The Glenlivet in cocktail form, opt for one of the younger bottles and save the older ones for sipping neat.

Unlike other stills, the lantern shape encourages maximum contact with the copper and the long design shape means only the lightest vapors reach the top. Each of these unique expressions captures The Glenlivet’s signature style and the spirit of the glen itself. Blended whisky was taking off in the 19th century, most notably by Edinburg merchant Andrew Usher with his OVG (Old Vatted Glenlivet) which was launched in 1852 and had The Glenlivet as a principle component in the blend.

Traditional oak casks which are used to mature the whisky give each expression its own distinct characteristics.
