About this deal

It's a sad fact that, although the always-contactable world in which we live is great for accessing cat memes, or telling your MP to go fuck herself because you're sad about the new Ghostbusters movie, it's utter death for any suspenseful thriller, and winding the clock back to before mobiles exist is a fairly common trope for avoiding such complications. But in the dog-eat-dog underworld of 1990s Soho - as a vicious gang war rages between London's two foremost crime families - will Frankie be tough enough, and smart enough to come out on top? I have been a big fan of Ronnie O'Sullivan for many years as a snooker player, if he keeps producing books like this then I will become a fan of Ronnie as an author too.

When this book debuted I was excited to read it, however for various reasons it sat on my shelf since 2017 until a few days ago when I got round to reading it. I don’t even know what I mean by that except to say that the whole story was very male-oriented which I suppose is to be expected when we only really follow the story from Frankie’s point of view. Ronnie's own life story is fascinating, and as a template for a character, Ronnie himself is a great place to start. Overall as a gangland thriller almost, Frames does lack the punch of a Martina Cole or Jessie Keane novel but as an enjoyable thriller in its own right it is definitely a book that I can recommend and I am excited to read the sequel. That style is replicated here in the first of a trilogy following cheeky snooker club owner Frankie James; with gangsters, police, family and murder.

The first in a gripping crime fiction series by snooker legend Ronnie O' Sullivan, Framed is a fast-paced, tightly plotted thriller. There was even a reference to him putting on an event and getting some well-known players in, like The Rocket. There followed a momentary surge in interest regarding Bruce's oeuvre, and I became both a respected literary critic and a fabulously wealthy man, resplendent with high status and clothed only in the garb of kings.

It has a slow start and from then it has the odd burst of action with an ending you see coming a mile off. Having said that, I've read less authentic crime thrillers and some of the interplay between the characters is actually done with a bit of heart and, dare I say it, panache. He always swore to his mum he'd keep his younger, wilder brother out of trouble, but when Jack turns up at the club, covered in someone else's blood, and with the cops hard on his heels, Frankie has no choice but to enter the sordid world of bent coppers, ruthless mobsters and twisted killers he's tried all his life to avoid. There’s a particular scene where Frankie is trying to interrogate someone, Ronnie goes on to say that Jack, Frankie’s brother, had asked he question - impossible given where Jack is! With an absent mother and a father in jail, it falls on Frankie to try and help prove Jack's innocence. But aside from a couple of throw-away scenes in which the hero plays a couple frames to kill some time, and a passing reference to getting "The Rocket" to play in a proposed tournament, there's virtually no snooker content at all. Naturally enough I was being sent several recommendations of other sport stars' literary output, urged to pursue their folly in much the same vein, but it was only when alerted about the release of Ronnie O'Sullivan's first novel Framed that I decided to descend from my ivory tower and dip back into another's work.
