About this deal

The nine stories in the collection are the products of much careful observation, writing, and re-writing, and that shows in their craftsmanship. Marauding is a practical necessity (“Once you back down from one job, you’re lucky if they’ll even let you put in for a flat-fee trade escort”), and, besides, it’s less “crazy-making” than domestic life, because the latter is so precarious.

This cinematic opening, full of garish colors and things not quite what they seem, introduces an unputdownable whodunit that centers on the molestation of a young boy. Everything Ravaged, Everything Burned,” plucked at random from a teeming slush pile, was Tower’s first attempt at publishing his fiction. It’s crazy-making, yet you cling to them with everything and close your eyes against the rest of it.

For the next few years, fans of Harper’s magazine and readers of The Washington Post could read Tower’s giddily depressing journalism on subjects as casually horrifying as telemarketers and Young Republicans. wells tower bizi batmış adamların, boşanmış ama hala karısını seven kocaların, kuzenini kıskanıp her şeyi bok eden genç kızların, ansızın kaçıp giden üvey annesinden sonra bunamış babasıyla baş başa kalan oğullların, sert üvey babaların, lunaparkta çalışan pek çok kayıp ruhun arasında dolaştırıyor. Still, a strange choice, even considering the fact that such a title becomes emblematic of a basic kind of desperation and loss tucked deep within the characters of this collection. Often the men are older, battered, no longer successful, and the women have had their patience sorely tried.

If Wells Tower is the modern Mark Twain as I read somewhere, then I am the modern Edmund Wilson with these book reviews so if you'll excuse me, I have to prepare my Truman Capote Award acceptance speech.

We been three weeks on the water for nothing, Haakon is maybe gonna die, and you can’t even see your way to splash a little taste around.

Djarf was from Hedeby-Slesvig up the Sli fjord, a foul and rocky locality whose people take a worrisome pleasure in the gruesome sides of life. No se trata del estereotipo del beautiful loser, en el que la derrota es una renuncia voluntaria, una elección estética: los personajes de Wells Tower son vulgares y sórdidos; a veces generosos y otras egoístas, siempre obstinadamente humanos. Some of these stories were probably much broader, sloppier and unfocused—first drafts—than the final products. His ordeal had put him in a mawkish bent of mind, and he raised a toast to his pretty surgeon, and to the splendid day, and how much it pleased him that he’d get to see the end of it.

We bivouac here tonight, and if the weather holds, we shoot down to Mercia tomorrow and see if we can’t sort things out with this fucker Aethelrik. In fact, Tower's skill at things like exposition and characterization mark him as almost old-fashioned.

Like, a lot of the times with his other stuff you're aware going in that it's all gonna be zany bizarro, but just being surprised doesn't provide that same immense thrill if you understand that that's what's scheduled to happen. I read part of one looking for a quote, realized I had no idea how it ended, and read about 10 pages very little of which was familiar. My Czech family’s house stands on a geopolitical rift: it occupies a place the political storms sweep through, uprooting everything that is settled.
