The main compartment, readily accessed via a large, clamshell-style, U-shaped top zipper with large pull loops for use with gloves, easily carries everything necessary for a full day in the mountains with space for cold-weather layers, plenty of food and water and even some specialized gear. By its design, it provides some ventilation as your back isn't totally covered by foam and doesn't risk the mind-numbering "squeaks" that can show up in trampoline style back panels attached to a peripheral frame. I’ve also carried up to 25 pounds comfortably in it while hiking, and yet the frame is still flexible enough to bend in half, making it very packable.
