About this deal

Packed full of superhero's and villains as well as normal everyday life situations, this is a great read for young and old alike. The Black Dragon killed Alfie's father in a battle at Stonehenge; the dragon's power and strength has increased due to finding parts of the ancient crown. Alfie is the future king, he's clumsy and wants a normal life, Alfie thinks his twin brother Richard is better suited for the job, a thought shared by the majority of the people.

I can’t help you there, but what I would say is that when sitting inside a British-engineered Land Rover Defender, you will feel very, very happy and secure in its capabilities to deal with anything thrown at it. I loved the mixture of historical fact and fiction and the use of real locations throughout the book. I have always loved the real Alfred the Great, and so this young new Alfred II wass quite interesting to me. Featuring a legendary superhero, a reluctant teen monarch and a secret centuries-long battle; Defender of the Realm is an epic, action-packed, adventure of a novel from debut authors Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler. But, Hayley is an interesting character, if anything, I would not mind if there are some changes of POV at the subsequent series.I wrestled with whether to give it four or three stars, but because of some issues I had with the pacing in the later chapters, I ultimately bumped it down. Some chapters are from Alfie’s perspective, others from Hayley’s, and that really balances things out. Defender Of The Realm tells the story or Alfie who is a reluctant heir to the thrown and who finds himself thrust into the limelight to take on his duty a little earlier in life than he would have thought. Mais lors d'une récente attaque à la Tour de Londres, une adolescente, témoin de la scène, a emporté un petit souvenir du combat (une précieuse écaille arrachée de la cuirasse du monstre). They are great at hooking the reader, pulling them along, then throwing in the unexpected to keep things interesting.

Both my kids loved it (my 11 year-old has read it 5 times and passed it round all her friends, urging them to read it so they can discuss it). When I was visiting the southwest of England, I saw a Defender wrapped in dark green, almost like British Racing Green, so I had to do some Landy spotting and take a photograph. He would like nothing better than to throw off his royal status and lead a normal teenage life, but instead he finds himself unexpectedly propelled on to the throne by the death of his father. You can turn up to a building site, a film premiere or park outside the Dorchester — which, in fact, I just recently did, and the concierge said people kept coming over to take a look at my Defender.

The characters were high schoolers who read like middle schoolers throughout except for in one or two key moments.Language:PG (1 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content:G; Violence:PG-13 (impaling with description of bloodshed). When his father dies unexpectedly, Alfie suddenly finds himself as the new king thrust into a battle he didn't even know existed. When Alfie becomes King he discovers a whole new duty to his country that is steeped in history and kept a secret for many years. Just having defeated the Black Dragon at his coronation, Alfie is trying to focus on making less of a fool of himself in his day job, something the Prime Minister is keen to encourage as much as possible, when a new threat hits the Kingdom. Flawed, in over his head, but doing his best through circumstances he can't control is my favorite type of hero.
