About this deal

Like Hustlers meets Crazy Rich Asians, Counterfeit is an exciting and original crime story that you’re sure to have a lot of fun with. This is the story of Ava Wong and her college friend Winnie Fang, who go into "business together" selling luxury designer counterfeit handbags. When their scheme is threatened and Winnie bolts, Ava is forced to face the consequences and must decide how to best play her hand.

In part two we are introduced to Winnie’s narrative which really did add more context to the story but at the same time changed the storyline.

Ava Wong appears to have it all: a high-flying career as a lawyer, a surgeon as a husband and a beautiful little toddler with whom she is currently staying at home.

All of this aside, Counterfeit is a unique read – think high end crime meets Sex and the City meets Crazy Rich Asians. The protagonists both play heavily on stereotypes to get away with a lot, because they supply the kind of narratives people expect to hear (just as they supply the handbags people expect to see). Chen attacks the topics of racial bias, cultural differences, and the expectations that women face, especially regarding family vs.This is a subject near and dear to my heart, and I think there is more to be written here, but I have to say that both of these books are insanely whiny and privileged. She put her career as a lawyer on hold be a stay at home mom for her young son who is a bit of a handful.

While Ava, with her Ivy League education, a handsome successful husband and a young son, may seem to have had it all, she confesses, her life was a bit of a mess. The last part dragged out a little with a super speedy epilogue, but this would be a good holiday or midweek read. It seems some authors like Kirstin Chen are never planning to change this writing style, which is dangerous to many people in different ways. Though they are also archetypes in a type of story that I routinely seek out, and so Chen didn't really have to do a lot of heavy lifting to get me on board. Confessions are inherently unreliable because the speaker has a clear agenda – to prove her innocence and hopefully go free – so readers understand from the get-go that she’s not entirely trustworthy, even if they don’t yet grasp to what extent.
