He worries more that the church will fall out of favour with the modern world surrounding it, if those with more traditional notions were to take charge.

The selected Pope had secrets too but why his was OK and others weren't was a puzzle of sorts to me.Like the author's Cicero novels, Conclave takes a world that seems distant and rarefied to most and aligns it with the sort of rivalry and backstabbing we're all familiar with.
