About this deal

Whether you are a cyclist, nature enthusiast or adventure traveler this book will capture both your interest and imagination page by page as author Sara Dykman recounts her 10,000-plus mile bike ride through North America, traveling the yearly migration route of monarch butterflies. I'm assuming she wants to motivate people to make a difference, not just shame people for things they have only indirect relationships to. TOO MANY TIMES I wanted to tell her to let her passion shine through, but in a way that gets people to want to join her, not stand back and avert their eyes.

Half lost at dusk, trying to avoid the main highway, I wandered through a partially built housing complex. As the Pacific Ocean heats up, evaporation increases, causing brewing storms to carry more and more moisture. After decades of pursuing the pleasures of cycling, I’m convinced that riding with an intent, an objective of some sort, adds meaning and value.Builds a data set that can more accurately track the migration timeline and how climate change is affecting monarch behavior in Mexico. Dykman is knowledgeable and opinionated and sometimes a little out there, but it was indeed fun to travel with her. Stuffed into the bags that were clipped, tied, and fastened to my bike was a collection of gear, old and new, that I needed to make the trip.

To me, however, it was a reliable machine, a deterrent to theft, a statement against consumerism, and my ticket to adventure.Besides keeping a watchful eye on both tourists and monarchs, such work provides local economic opportunities and reduces the pressure on the mountains and forest to provide logging, mining, and cultivation jobs.

That forest, the last remnants of Mexico’s expansive, ancient ecosystem, caps 12 isolated massifs clustered in a volcanic mountain chain in central Mexico. Avoiding the coldest, wettest conditions is of the utmost importance for monarchs, as their nightmare scenario occurs when the two conditions overlap. While other farms spray away the milkweed, Native American Seed embraces each plant and their monarch suitors. Dykman, founder of the adventure education program Beyond A Book, spent over nine months biking 10,201 miles with the monarchs, from Mexico to Canada and back again. Her almost incredible account captures the animal itself, the continent it crosses, and its plight with style and deep connection.Very nice, an examination of the migration landscapes more than the butterflies, which is perfect given the transformations that must occur to make the land healthy for all. Her passion for nature and conservation are evident as she educates her readers and fascinates them with tales of her unconventional adventures, serendipitous meetings and of course, monarch sightings. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature added the migrating monarch butterfly for the first time to its “red list” of threatened species and categorized it as “endangered” — two steps from extinct.

I loved her journey and the way she allows strangers to embrace her so together they can expand their common goal. At night, trunks tend to be an average of two and a half degrees Fahrenheit warmer than the surrounding ambient night temperature. Este libro tiene muchas de las cosas que mas me gustan: aventuras, ciclismo, exploración de la naturaleza, conciencia ambiental y mariposas monarca!I had arrived at the start of my trip, the start of my dream: to follow the monarchs by bicycle and give voice to their alarming decline. The presence of milkweed in agricultural fields (between crops and on field edges) declined 97 percent from 1999 to 2009 in Iowa, and 94 percent in Illinois. Spreading out in the millions across a landscape traced with roads, there were few route-planning limitations. Sara Dykman is a wildlife biologist who in 2017 biked over 10,000 miles on her journey to follow the Monarchs and to expand awareness about the challenges to their survival.
