About this deal

The lack of any optical vertical image shifting might leave you dependent on the projector's less-than-ideal digital automatic keystone correction or digital image shifting to get the edges of your image perpendicular. I didn't see any crosstalk in my tests, and saw only the moderate level of 3D-related motion artifacts that is typical for 3D projectors.

Setup is fairly simple, too: to help position the picture you'll use a bottom foot that’s used to adjust projection height and the manual zoom / focus dials along the top. By extension of that last point, the BenQ TH685 is also not the best at contrast or color performance. The remote isn't backlit, but it's small and simple and has dedicated and color coded on and off buttons.

It adjusts gamma based on the ambient light and when on, there's a five-position slider to adjust it. It put out the same 2,705 ANSI lumens in our measurements after multiple readings, or 77% of the published spec, which BenQ says falls below any expected tolerance and might suggest an issue with our sample or lamp. But for a gaming projector that can serve well for movie nights and holds up to ambient light during the day, the BenQ TH685i is solid. Shows and movies watched on the projector mostly looked desaturated in a room with any bit of ambient light and while the lower resolution worked for some content, the extra pixels would’ve made everything much, much sharper.Contrast ratio, as has been the case with all the projectors I reviewed this year, ended up being a no-contest win for the HT2050A. Rather than majoring on its home cinema talents, this model is pushed as a gamer's delight thanks to its high brightness, low input lag, 'Game' picture and sound presets, and support for the 120Hz refresh rates that have arguably proved the best new feature of the latest consoles and PCs.

It will also play 3D sources if you've still got any, but a lack of compatible glasses meant we weren't able to try the 3D playback out for this review. support wasn't turned on with early firmware versions, so be sure your projector's firmware is fully up to date. Single-chip DLP projector DLP technology uses an array of tiny mirrors on a chip to make their pictures, and in affordable single-chip DLP solutions this chip is accompanied by a fast-spinning colour wheel. The BENQ TH685 original bulb inside includes a bulb from one of the OEM manufacturers (Osram P-VIP, Philips UHP, Ushio, Matsushita, Iwasaki HSCR) and has plastic housing from a generic manufacturer.I'm so new to projectors and I think I have some longstanding preconceptions about their limitations which could be out of date. For the most accurate picture, I used the Cinema mode, along with the Normal color temperature mode. Even when playing a game at 60Hz, such as Spider-Man: Miles Morales, the TH685i's response feels quick. The same goes for the RS-232 port, something required by some high-end home theater control systems.

SmartEco adjusts the light output based on the content's brightness with a focus on image quality and with the measurement of a full white screen didn't affect overall brightness at all. Even though it's downcoverted, the BenQ TH685i retains great detail in 4K material such as season 5 of The Expanse. But the TH685 is certainly more satisfying – if, inevitably, no replacement at all for a half-decent soundbar or external sound system – than most budget projector sound systems are. Though this does, before anyone gets too carried away, reflect the fact that this is a full HD projector, at a time when the majority of home entertainment projectors are starting to offer real or at least pseudo 4K playback. However, it also affects color accuracy, which is why color wheels in projectors meant for traditional home theater in a dark room—such as the BenQ HT2150ST—don't include white panels. The TH685 is clearly positioned by BenQ as a gaming projector, so let’s first explore its console and PC credentials.
