About this deal

DC added to its momentum with its 1960 introduction of Justice League of America, a team consisting of the company's most popular superhero characters.

That's exactly the image I had of Silver Age Batman, but as Aahz has said, during the years traditionally considered Silver Age there are two periods. Both artists expressed a cinematic approach at times that occasionally altered the more conventional panel-based format that had been commonplace for decades. The entire collection contains work by Bill Finger, Edmond Hamilton, Dave Wood, and Jack Schiff, Sheldon Moldoff, Stan Kaye, Charles Paris, Dick Sprang, Win Mortimer, and Bob Oksner. On January 12, 1966, ABC premiered a live-action Batman television series starring Adam West and Burt Ward.

Starting with Batwoman's debut in the mid-1950s, lots of the stories are up to the level of the Golden Age Omnibuses (to which I've given more stars) — decent detective stories, the original Batwoman (what can I say? Historian Will Jacobs suggests the Silver Age ended in April 1970 when the man who had started it, Julius Schwartz, handed over Green Lantern—starring one of the first revived heroes of the era—to the new-guard team of Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams in response to reduced sales. As far as Batman is concerned - by the early 1940's he'd pretty much already been cemented as this reasonably light-hearted hero who nonetheless participated mostly in noir-ish crime/detective adventures and fought the iconic villains. To address public concerns, in 1954 the Comics Code Authority was created to regulate and curb violence in comics, marking the start of a new era. Too many new directions—especially [the sword-and-sorcery trend begun by the character] Conan and monsters [in the wake of the Comics Code allowing vampires, werewolves and the like]—were on firm ground by this time. Notably absent are most of the villains that made Batman famous: there's one Joker story and one that features a bust of Two Face, but that's it. Individual volumes tend to focus on collecting either the works of prolific comic creators, like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko; major comic book events like " Blackest Night" and " Infinite Crisis"; complete series or runs like Gotham Central and Grayson or chronological reprints of the earliest years of stories featuring the company's most well-known series and characters like Batman and Justice League of America.

Originally I decided to create a list of all Batman's villains but I wanted to do a numbered list and the site limits those to 100 characters. Damian’s heroic death was one of the key moments in Morrison’s seven-year run on various Batman titles, but the character was eventually resurrected. When you go back and look at the old dot matrix original issues and compare them to the re-printings contained within this omnibus…well…there simply is no comparison. The LEGO Batman Movie (2017), a spirited comedic romp told with computer-generated LEGO bricks, was much more warmly received. During the late 1950s and the 1960s, Dell, which had published comics in 1936, offered licensed TV series comic books from Twilight Zone to Top Cat, as well as numerous Walt Disney titles. Protecting their secret selves is almost secondary to fighting crime, which raises the question of why this plot contrivance was so important, not only to Batman but to Superman and Wonder Woman too.

There have been suggestions that during the Silver Age, DC would start with a compelling over and then craft a story around it. By my count, there are almost exactly the issues needed to make three more silver age volumes before we get to the “new look Batman,” which started in mid 1964. My first contact with this era was in Batman: From the 30s to the 70s, when I was about ten years old, and I loved it. In addition to their individual titles, they teamed in their group series The Mighty Crusaders, joined by the Comet and Flygirl.Editor Jack Schiff soon made the Superman-Batman team a regular feature in WORLD'S FINEST, where Hamilton wrote the majority of stories until 1966. In 2013, DC began collecting the earliest stories of some its most enduring series and characters in matching trade dress volumes, titled Golden Age Omnibus, Silver Age Omnibus and Bronze Age Omnibus, replacing the earlier lines Showcase Presents, DC Archive Editions and DC Chronicles.
