About this deal

The talented Claudia Efemini has written a beautiful novel that shines a lot on an important topic that, unfortunately, not many are knowledgeable about or have had the chance to be informed on.

This work has left me inspired and hopeful that young voices will not allow history to remain neglected under the chronicles of British colonisation. Claudia Efemini has created something that everyone should read, if only to learn a pivotal part in Nigerian history.International Women’s Day also gives us an opportunity to recognise the inner and outer work we all need to do to achieve gender equality for all women, regardless of where they come from. A Letter Away From Asaba' is an account of the Asaba massacre during the Nigerian Civil War woven into a fictional narrative.

I am thrilled to announce the book cover for my debut novel ‘A Letter Away From Asaba’ designed by Quinthia Nsema.

My book is a historical fiction novella that seeks to inform readers about the censorship of the tragic Asaba massacre of the Nigerian civil war. I’ve included a quote at the beginning of this post that I wrote in the article, which really encapsulates my motivation for writing this book. Efemini’s passion for history, her heritage, and shedding light on the Asaba massacre of 1967, is evident throughout the pages of A Letter Away From Asaba.A massive thank you to Deborah Alhassan for organising the book launch and Paula Melissa Ugochukwu for hosting it. Not long ago did I do a podcast episode with a close friend of mine Esther Akinyomi, for One Edinburgh (an organisation that aims to support international students navigate their way around the UK higher education system). I am so thrilled to announce that my debut novel ‘A Letter Away From Asaba’ will be published in spring 2023. Learning about the Nigerian Civil War and Asaba in particular through these two women was enlightening and truly educational. Onome’s experiences navigating a white campus as a black student will be relatable for many young readers today, and the lessons she learns can provide guidance and support to the readers who identify with her.
