About this deal

This graphic novel's title refers to an eclectic band of space beings from throughout the galaxy who have banded together as Force Nomad to complete all tasks assigned them by the Galarchy. Was this a self-inflicted punishment, because he didn't have a lot of time for a back up plan or did Bruce really kick his son out of the house? While their time together was filled with memorable adventures, their commitment didn't match over time as Batman continuously bled for Gotham and Robin found himself splitting his time between the Caped Crusader and the Teen Titans. His earliest comics work was writing Evangeline first for Comico Comics in 1984 (then later for First Comics, who published the on-going series), on which he worked with his then-wife, the artist Judith Hunt. Tolkien's The Hobbit for Eclipse with artist David Wenzel between 1989 and 1990, and began writing Marc Spector: Moon Knight in June 1989.

He also wrote the Ruse spin-off Archard's Agents one-shots in January and November '03 and April '04, the last released shortly before CrossGen's complete collapse forced the cancellation of all of its comics, before which Dixon wrote a single issue of Sojourn (May '04). Things get back on track in a big way from there as Dick takes on the Nightwing codename, develops a proto new costume and reunites with his old flame Batgirl as he decides to reintroduce himself to the naughtier elements of Gotham.

I wish I was impressed with this as everyone else seemed to be, but I just didn't think it was all that good. With collaborator Chuck Dixon, Scott wrote BATGIRL YEAR ONE, named Best Miniseries of 2003 by WIZARD Magazine, as well as the bookending minis ROBIN YEAR ONE and NIGHTWING YEAR ONE. It was nice seeing Dick break away and become his own person, I think his story is relatable to almost everyone who comes to the point in their lives where they break away from their parents and come into their own. Dixon’s tales were exciting, exploring new territory, while still keeping Dick Grayson just within the sphere of the other Bat-titles.

I think the idea is to convey Bats as being less pissed at Dick for botching his job and more hurt by the fact that he's spending more time with the Titans than his mentor, but Dixon's Batman isn't actually nuanced enough to get that point across. Scott Beatty has authored adventures for many of comics' most iconic characters, including Batman and Robin tales for DC Comics, as well as The Phantom and Buck Rogers for Dynamite Entertainment. So it does come as a surprise when it is learned that there was a long period of time between Dick Grayson becoming Nightwing, and when he would finally graduate to a title of his own. The first time I met the character he was already Nightwing, and most of his adventures were taking place in the form of guest-starring in Batman comics. Right now, you most likely have some time to get caught up with new things in pop culture and also revisit old favorites in your collection. This graphic novel is also a great way to introduce newcomers to the character since, in pop culture, Dick Grayson is still Robin for many people, despite the fact that there are at least four different people that have been Robin in the comics.
