About this deal

The battle when it came was well laid out by Cornwell and easy to follow the tactics and flow, and was full of his trademark grittiness that immersed me as if I was there. This is set back in the middle of the Peninsular War - The Bridge at Alamaraz in May 1812 to be precise - putting it after Sharpe's Company (The Siege of Badajoz, January - April 1812) but before Sharpe's Sword (the Salamanca Campaign of June and July 1812). To mark Folio’s 75th anniversary, Michael Ende’s The Neverending Story is published as a magical new edition, beautifully illustrated by award-winning artist Marie-Alice Harel and bursting with exquisite design details. The groundbreaking debut novel of Hugo Award-winning author Becky Chambers, one of the most imaginative voices in contemporary science fiction, is a truly galactic limited edition. But how he gets there is what made that book “tense” – how will he achieve the very clearly stated goal in the face of several obstacles?

Cornwell's strict Protestant upbringing informed the background of A Crowning Mercy, which took place during the English Civil War.

Loved ones come and go due to death or desertion, leaving him “in play” for a future damsel in distress. The first adventure in the Folio Society editions of ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’ series, Enid Blyton’s The Enchanted Wood features Jonathan Burton’s enchanting illustrations and a new introduction by Michael Morpurgo. We have to fight them off ourselves,’ he said, and wondered if he would have done better to have stayed in the church. This is definitely for the Sharpe fan - if you've read the others, you have to read this one as well. Bernard Cornwell brings all his considerable descriptive skill to bear on the infamous Battle of Assaye, described by General Arthur Wellesley himself as the battle of which he was most proud.

And the impossible is exactly what the formidable Captain Sharpe is asked to do when he's sent on an undercover mission to a small village in the Spanish countryside, far behind enemy lines. So when, the dust still settling after the Battle of Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington needs a favour, he turns to Sharpe. And we get to read about the dear departed Mrs Sharpe having a particularly brutal duel with a partisan. The bloodthirsty biographies of the world’s most infamous pirates are reproduced in this Folio edition of Captain Charles Johnson’s renowned work, including original woodcut illustrations and a fascinating introduction by Margarette Lincoln. He named his chief protagonist Richard Sharpe, a rifleman involved in most major battles of the Peninsular War. Richard Sharpe, the most brilliant – but the most wayward – soldier in the British army, finds himself faced with an impossible task. Featuring a fascinating introduction by Val McDermid and new illustrations by Juan Esteban Rodríguez, each copy has been signed by both the introducer and the illustrator. Folio commissioned Hokyoung Kim for the artwork, while the late author’s wife, Wendy Benchley, provides a fascinating new introduction.

In 1992, Smith participated in the United Nations Environmental Programme’s exhibition ‘The Illustrator and the Environment’. A Rifleman is now portrayed as an 'elite' soldier that is near untouchable on the battlefield, that was never the case before. From the strife and division of the Dark Ages to the blood and bravery of the Napoleonic Wars, Bernard Cornwell’s has been bringing history to life since the early Eighties when he created the unlikely hero renegade-turned-officer Richard Sharpe. He is also the author of THE GRAIL QUEST series, set in the Hundred Years’ War, THE WARLORD chronicles, set in Arthurian Britain, a number of standalone novels, one non-fiction work on Waterloo and the series with which he began, the SHARPE series.

This book uses the real-life Battle of Almaraz which took place 18-19 May 1812 where the British and Portuguese were fighting the French in Almaraz, Spain. No more beautifully descriptive sceneries and locations, just completely over the top meaningless words.I love it hen history is brought to life through fiction and Bernard Cornwall has done a superb job of this in Sharpes Command. He's also got a different spelling here, where he used to be "Garrard", he's now "Gerrard", which initially led me to believe he was a different person, but no. Born in the gutter, raised a foundling, he joined the army twenty-one years ago, and it’s been his home ever since. The only obvious mistake is that Cornwell seems to have forgotten that Sharpe wasn’t a Major at this point in the series. Cornwell wanted to start the series with the Siege of Badajoz but decided instead to start with a couple of "warm-up" novels.
