About this deal

Adolescence is a complicated time, and some really bright people think that when the adult emerges, it’s like you’re being taken over by a different person.

She and Gretchen spent hours ranking their friendships, trying to determine who was a best friend and who was an everyday friend, debating whether anyone could have two best friends at the same time, writing each other’s names over and over in purple ink, buzzed on the dopamine high of belonging to someone else, having a total stranger choose you, someone who wanted to know you, another person who cared that you were alive. Their friend Margaret, who has always wanted to be thin, starts dropping weight until she’s skeletally thin. It's brought up as though something to do with her might feature in the book or help fix the characters situation but then it's dropped completely. and not just fans of horror books, but everyone who likes a good story with witty dialog, great characters and a well crafted horror plot, with few laughs.National treasure Grady Hendrix follows his classic account of a haunted IKEA-like furniture showroom, Horrorstor (2014), with a nostalgia-soaked ghost story, My Best Friend's Exorcism.

It's mentioned that this book was set in the same neighborhood, just a few years before, so I had to read it first. you” are probably just an echo of me right now, because i doubt anyone has come this far down the babble spiral with me, but i’m okay with that. a reverse-mullet review: GIF-party in the front, long tendrils of ruminating “business” in the back. Yes, there are some cringe-worthy moments and yes, they are less scary because of the humor that's blended through out, but for me, that didn't make it any less entertaining.

It skirts on queer-baiting, not because the girls joke they love each other "dearly but not queerly" but because of the power of the relationship portrayed- plus, there are mentions of "something I have to tell you" added here and there on top of other evidence (no spoilers) teasing of the unspoken in a book that is otherwise anything BUT subtle.

Happy Death Day' Filmmaker, Gotham Group Tackling Horror Novel 'My Best Friend's Exorcism' (Exclusive)". In his new book Hendrix again merges two genres: a Generation X, memoir-ish coming of age tale and a scary take on William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist. The high school melodrama and parents-just-don't-understand perspective can seem a bit farfetched at times, but for the most part feel familiar if you can still put yourself in a 16 year old mindset. But most of all, she remembers what happened to Gretchen and how everything got so fucked up back in 1988, the year her best friend was possessed by the devil. The ending really got me and made me think of my two childhood best friends, who I am so lucky and thankful are still in my life. Primero, porque desde el primer instante nos enteramos cual será el núcleo de la historia y eso le resta tensión narrativa para conectar el misterio con el lector sobre lo que le puede estar pasando a Gretchen, la amiga de Abby, así que allí ya pierde peso argumental. When those things happened, they learned that although those inches added up to miles, sometimes those inches were only inches after all. She and Gretchen spent hours ranking their friendships, trying to determine who was a best friend and who was an everyday friend, debating whether anyone could have two best friends at the same time.

The exorcism scene was a bit cheesy in the beginning with Brother Lemon, but the ending of it with Abby saved it. The characters have nuance too, and even those who don’t end up changing or going through anything major hardly feel static because they’re likely to be relatable figures. The year is 1988 and Abby Rivers has just started her sophomore year of high school in South Carolina. During "slave day," people are bought by other students and have to follow their "master" around and do whatever is commanded of them. Now, before I jump into my review, there are a bunch of trigger warnings for this novel I wanted to share. The usual themes and tropes of possession stories are all accounted for and present in this book, but I still feel like Hendrix brings something different and unique to the story. i love the cover of the paperback, but unfortunately it does not include all the yearbook signatures of the hardcover, of which i particularly like abby’s, whose P. I picked this book up after beginning the author's other novel, Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires.
