About this deal

We can all take our memories of Mia into our future lives and be thankful for the short, but memorable time we each have spent with her. We use cookies to collect information about how you use the Charity Commission Register of Charities and Digital Services, such as pages you visit.

Mia uses exercise to support her in her ongoing physical rehabilitation and fundamentally believes it is critical in supporting fellow survivors to lead as active a life as possible. Mia was left with locked-in syndrome after a stroke at the age of 21, the day before she was due to go on a travel agent fam trip to the US. While holidaying at the park in Abersoch in June this year, Ms Austin indicated to her mother and carer she wanted to eat a marshmallow. After suffering a stroke at 21 leaving her with Locked-in Syndrome, Mia wrote a book, travelled, and inspired everyone who was lucky enough to meet her.

has used her time on the training track and with her coaches to take it as a positive and take the challenge in full stride. Mia was very very lucky to have both a natural support system an d a paid support system that enabled her to live her life to the fullest. She had become well known in the region for her charity work after suffering the stroke a decade ago.The hearing was told Mia had been fit and healthy before suffering her stroke and had subsequently learned to communicate through a spell chart and a computer.

Her mum Carol told the inquest: "Apparently on Love Island they did a marshmallow challenge, you put marshmallows in the mouth. Unfortunately, her maiden campaign stopped there due to a syndesmosis injury, but even that was enough of a sample size to show what Carlton fans can hope to see from Austin for years to come in the Navy Blue. Mia has recently completed a Criminology Course, a Forensics Course, and also a Criminal Justice Course. There was a lot of training, I think we trained eight months of rehab before we could get back with the team,” Austin said. She later had one placed in her mouth, but choked on the sweet and became unconscious and died at the scene, despite the efforts of those with her in the chalet, park staff and paramedics.I feel like even before I got injured and when I was injured I was still learning from them," she said. A week after opening her eyes, Mia was diagnosed with ‘Locked-in Syndrome’, a condition where Mia has been left her trapped in her own body, unable to speak.
