About this deal

Look no further than the individual stitches in the astronauts’ uniforms and seats to the quilt-like material that line the space vessels.

It's an immensely difficult idea to get your head around, but the movie is full of those kinds of dilemmas. Indeed across the entire near-three hour runtime there are only a couple of shots that look even vaguely flawed - during the baseball game when the dust storm lands there's a slightly pastel tone which looks unnatural, and when they hit the ice planet the long shots of the ship make it look just the tiniest bit fake, like a green-screen superimposed effect. Shooting in Iceland: Miller’s Planet/Mann’s Planet – The two planets in the film share a common Earth-Bound country in Iceland. I don’t think Spielberg would ever let the science overshadow the story and most importantly, the characters, but I’ll exercise my right to digress again because I actually do want to get to all the geeky scientific stuff in this review too.

If you look past its flaws then you'll likely see that this truly is a visionary work of frequently opulent majesty. Interstellar comes to our favorite 4K Ultra HD format in a three-disc Combo Pack (1 UHD, 2 Blu-ray Discs) with Digital HD and a whopping three hours of in-depth, behind-the-scenes bonus content detailing the epic shoot, the scientific realities explored in the film, a look at creating the stunning visuals, plus an extended cut of “The Science of Interstellar” broadcast special and much more. Contrast is pitch-perfect throughout, giving the sky a lovely, realistic glow in the fluffy clouds while allowing remarkable visibility of the most minute feature and facet in the distance.

Noise/Artifacts: All you’ll really find here is some very minimal grain throughout, but you have to love the fact that this puppy was shot on film. That’s all I can really ask for here is for you to have an open-mind, not closed like mine was unfortunately the first time I saw Interstellar. This Ultra HD version manages to add a fine layer of color (via HDR) as well as some more detail and texture to the image. You see, when it comes to the 40 something-year old director Christopher Nolan, in my opinion he’s earned the right to make a mistake or two and I’ll stand by the man, support him and walk in blindly to whatever his name is attached to no matter what, just like I did for Man of Steel last year.

DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack there will be a new addition among them as this presentation rocked, literally. I could go on and on and list my favorite moments like I did up above, but I think you get the point I’m trying to drive home. I could go on and on here, but once that IMAX frame resolution goes wide open so does the exceptional depth of field here. Like the Blu-ray in 2015 (see review here) I resisted the urge to turn this one down the entire time as I just wanted to experience the beautiful chaos like I was really one of the astronauts in the film.
