About this deal

Self-taught photographer Brandon Stanton created it back in 2010; essentially he walked around New York City stopping random people on the streets, taking their portraits, learning snippets of their stories, and captioning the pictures with their quotes.

If I'm ever stranded on a desert island, I want my copy of HONY to keep me tethered in some fundamental way to my human life and what it means to be human.

Following Hurricane Sandy, Stanton traveled to the hardest-hit neighborhoods in New York City to photograph the residents, volunteers, and first responders who had lived through the destruction. Stanton has published two books in featuring his work in 2013: “Humans of New York: Stories” and “Humans of New York”. edition, 1st printing) Very large, squarish, very heavy book, smooth white covers, six color photos on front, nine on back, 428 glossy pages, color on every page.

It makes you think, though: every person in this book has a unique, multifaceted life story, and these people are only a tiny fraction of the world. In Stanton’s photo of the encounter, Vidal sits grinning behind the Resolute desk, the President and principal flanking him like wings. To the extent that “Famous Men” has an overriding agenda, it is to arrive at a sense of the dignity—or, perhaps, even more simply, the reality—of others, despite the stubborn mystery of their circumstances.

the Homo Sapiens Agenda a few years back, I’ve been a little obsessed with the idea that “people are houses with vast rooms and tiny windows.

There's a saying that "Everyone has a Story" well this is so true, in this book, the people of New York have opened up their lives to Brandon Stanton. His skillful readjustments and subsequent popularity even led him to be sponsored by the United Nations. I’d maybe like to build a bridge in Wisconsin because there are a lot of people in Wisconsin who might not have bridges, but I don’t really know where Wisconsin is.

I knew immediately that I was going to leave New York with an amazing collection of street portraits. HONY easily makes the reader captivated with people that we don’t know and establish a new perspective towards the way we view life. Stanton’s focus on the characters’ props also adds to the phototypes, as it makes the photos more real and unique to each individual. That these details—secondary, at best, to the stated purposes of “Stories”—survive, and manage to give the book a hidden, beautiful core, is a sign of Stanton’s real (and clearly growing) ability as a portraitist and poser of people. A Number One New York Times bestseller, Humans of New York began in the summer of 2010, when photographer Brandon Stanton set out on an ambitious project: to single-handedly create a photographic census of New York City.

This book has made me realise, that we really shouldn't judge a person too quickly - without knowing their background story, we can so easily get those first impressions very wrong! The result of these efforts was Humans of New York, a vibrant blog in which he featured his photos alongside quotes and anecdotes. Stanton, who grew up in Georgia and briefly worked as a bond trader, started Humans of New York almost immediately after arriving in New York City, for the first time, in his mid-twenties. Stanton also supported another campaign of the Little Hills organization, which plans build Rwanda's first children's hospital.
