About this deal

Both are things I have previously found counter-productive to the chilling atmosphere the genre is meant to provide the reader with. Whilst she tries to find the cause of Jay’s death, a series of events will happen that will change her life forever. This book puts a perfect image in my head for every scene I read, and I truly believe I am with Sophie in the horrible world of the Craig family and its disasters. I love the title Frozen Charlotte it is true as it mentioned those freaky dolls over and over and I could barely sleep when I finished it with those dolls and their diabolical ideas which creeped me out.

Because of this I found it hard to create an attachment to any of the characters, with the exception of Cameron and Sophie whom I was definitely rooting for.I think I found out about this book from someone’s Halloween TBR and added it to my list as soon as they started talking about it and now this review has made me want to read it even more! Cameron, on the other hand, is more of a recluse and not particularly friendly either, self-conscious about his scarred hand and bitter about the fact that he can't play the piano anymore. I've read other reviews saying this was a young adult novel, but I found the premise (and those horrible dolls! These dolls then inspired Alex Bell to weave this macabre story and I really like it when books use real elements in their plot, I feel it gives a little nod of authenticity to the tale. The story is narrated by Sophie, who goes to stay with her step-cousins on the Isle of Skye for the summer.

This reminded me so much of the horror I read as a kid in the 70’s, in the days before parental guidelines existed. The story may not be exactly terrifying for more mature readers, but I wouldn’t recommend to children as I know that had I read this a decade or so ago I’d definitely be having nightmares! One time i got scared of my own reflection in the mirror… I made my twin sleep in my room for a few nights! At her Uncle’s house, Sophie hears things going bump in the night and she hears voices seeming to be coming from the creepy Frozen Charlotte dolls in her deceased cousin’s bedroom.

And, reading Frozen Charlotte, I felt pretty much the same - there was an unpleasant urge to keep checking that one of the nasty things hadn't leapt from the page and infected my house, just by dint of my reading. So the line of creepy dolls adorning this book's front cover should have clued me in to the fact that, upon reading this, I would be unable to have an easy night of sleep for quite some time!
