About this deal

At its heart, this is a tale of obsession, which I found fascinating (though it took a while to get there), but then so much other stuff started happening with murders and revenge that this primary theme that I wanted to learn more about got buried. But now she has decided to walk away from it all – including divorcing her husband, Wallace – before her past secrets catch up with her. So this is first for my with this author but I've heard lots of great things about her so when I got the offer of an early read I thought I'd take the opportunity to see what all the fuss is about and I can now completely understand why she is so highly rated. A unusual and thrilling tale of long kept secrets and dangerous obsession, combined with a cast of very strong characters. Written with a clear and non-judgemental insight into the human psyche, the story gathers pace and left me breathless.

There are twists and turns galore, as I’ve come to expect from Koomson, but I did not see the ending coming at all and I was shocked, but in a good way.I won’t say any more as I don’t want to put spoilers in this review but trust me, this is such a unique story – I haven’t read a thriller with something similar, so good! And this (illness, mental state, obsession) played a huge part within this thriller that gripped my full attention. We spend a lot of time categorising people, while forgetting that very few of us sit in these categories neatly and stay there – we all fit into multiple categories. It’s something that happens to them because it’s something that happens to Black people just trying to live their lives every day but it’s not the main plot and this is not a book about racism. Her published titles include: Tell Me Your Secret, The Brighton Mermaid, The Friend, When I Was Invisible, That Girl From Nowhere, The Flavours of Love, The Woman He Loved Before, Goodnight, Beautiful and The Chocolate Run.

I really enjoyed this book, maybe it was the different perspectives and the forced breaks in between which added to the reading experience. This is another winner from a very talented author and someone whose books I will always want to read. The story is told through two timelines where we meet Cleo in the present as she is going through a divorce and being faced with a murder investigation, and in the past when she is at university and entering into her first relationship with the peculiar Heath.Usually, this would be a positive for me as I prefer to be shocked than for a story to go down the obvious route, but I did feel slightly let down when a new twist came into play. Usually, being in a library space, with the books and the atmosphere they created, acted like a shield to protect me from the excesses of being around other people. They absorbed the nonsense and made me not mind as much if they went off on random tangents that were nothing to do with me.
