About this deal

Upsetting scenes occur in which characters deal with illness, old age, and the death of loved ones - as well as their own fear of death. But the new Covid section at the end, with its unexpected pivot to drama and crisis, works well enough.

Jam-packed with jokes about bedpans and the indignities of ageing, Eyre’s film lacks the needling sharpness of something like Jack Thorne’s scathing COVID drama Help, tip-toeing around the specifics of the NHS’ current crises until a powerful yet totally out-of-place pandemic set coda. Allelujah celebrates the spirit of the elderly patients whilst paying tribute to the deep humanity of the medical staff battling with limited resources and ever-growing demand, based on a play by Alan Bennett. The film is constantly compromised by its attempts to barb its bouquets of community cutesiness with polemical punches. While the juxtaposition of the twist and the saccharine goings-on in the rest of the film is shocking, it also makes the lead-up to the concluding thesis feel toothless and non-committal in comparison, imbuing it with something of an identity crisis that compromises the effectiveness of its noble message. In October 2021, it was announced that Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi, Jennifer Saunders, Bally Gill, Russell Tovey, and David Bradley had joined the cast of the film, [5] and principal photography began later that month. There’s an interesting dynamic between the ward’s care leads, Gill’s initially idealistic Dr Valentine and Jennifer Saunders’ more cynical nurse Sister Gilpin, whilst their patients are a charmingly eclectic bunch. When the geriatric ward in a small Yorkshire hospital is threatened with closure, the hospital decides to fight back by galvanizing the local community: they invite a news crew to film their preparations for a concert in honour of the hospital’s most distinguished nurse. When The Beth, a geriatric ward in a small Yorkshire hospital, comes under threat of closure due to continuing NHS cuts, staff and residents alike — spearheaded by Sister Gilpin (Jennifer Saunders) and Dr Valentine (Bally Gill) — band together to fight for the hospital’s future. Somewhere in the middle, something most accurately described as an unholy cross between an Age UK advert and The Good Nurse takes place.

It’s not completely out of left field and is telegraphed subtly but consistently throughout the piece, but it re-contextualises the entire film in a way that will either make or break it for audiences. Bally Gill plays the genuinely caring Dr Valentine and Jennifer Saunders is the formidable, no-nonsense ward sister Gilpin who runs a tight ship. The ceremony to honour Alma is due to occur that day; before it starts, Mary takes Valentine to one side and shows him a video she took of Alma tending to Molly. The film stars Jennifer Saunders, Bally Gill, Russell Tovey, David Bradley, Derek Jacobi, and Judi Dench.
