About this deal

This Jazz Age impostor s life makes for quite the story, and in King Con, Paul Willetts knows just how to tell it.

In an age with little easy communication like telephones and no wire services to check out fantastic stories, Laplante stayed one step, ahead of the law for years. A notorious fraudster dubbed King Con after scamming thousands from unsuspecting victims has been jailed. Laplante somehow managed to marry twice more, once in England and again to a countess in Italy -- all, of course, without benefit of a prior divorce. Obviously, rock ’n’ roll didn’t exist back then, yet there was something rock star–like about his excesses—the drugs, the alcohol, the casual sex, the luxury hotels, the parties.

Keir Starmer vows to ban trans 'conversion therapy' if he becomes PM despite fears parents and teachers. King Con would make a terrific movie or television series (not surprising from film and television veteran Cannell), but I feel like reading the novel was even more satisfying than viewing the action (and there’s LOTS of action) would have been. As an added bonus, we will be recording the event for a possible live CD to be released at a later date. Our old buddy KROQ DJ Tim "poorman" Trenton has been crankin' some King Con during his syndicated tv show.

Have I, dear reader, in the best Edgar Laplante tradition, convinced you to part with some of your money? The court was told Clark – who posed as Alistair Campbell – was operating under the company name All Trades when he fleeced his victims. He moved on to pretending to be a hospital consultant on dates, but since a previous jail term for claiming to be the Duke of Arundel to obtain a Ferrari his favoured modus operandi has been playing the role of a leading barrister.
