About this deal

Intriguing, moving and funny, the character driven stories conjure up a richly imagined world in which Jackson Brodie attempts to bring resolution to the victims of unexplained mysteries and comfort to the survivors of personal tragedies. Another story thread is told through the eyes of Crystal, who has literally come up through the gutter, a past she hides from everyone, especially Tommy. To Jackson Brodie, former police inspector turned private investigator, the world consists of one accounting sheet – Lost on the left, Found on the right – and the two never seem to balance. I. series consistent in its exploration of people’s behavior—from quirks to evils—starring a lovable hero who attracts all sorts, Kate Atkinson’s series will keep you entertained for a long while. And in the third story, Michelle Morrison apparently has a mad fit, and kills her husband with an axe.

He’s an archetypal sleuth – troubled, with a messy past; he’s clever but gets into scrapes through his dogged determination to keep digging. A perfect title, really, for the cynicism woven throughout the series, as once again we get multiple incidents separated by decades: a violent attack on a mother and young children while picnicking, with only a six-year-old survivor; a train crash; Brodie stealing a toddlers' hair for paternity testing; the family murderer set to be released from prison; the now-adult survivor disappearing…We bounce between Yorkshire and Edinburgh as strangers' lives continue to intersect with multiple plots and stories being woven together. And the heart breaks for Crystal Holroyd, who thinks she has escaped the shadow of a historic child exploitation ring only to find that she has all along been living in a contemporary of the same horrible network. With two missing paintings, two missing suspects, a crumbling manor house and an investigator determined to solve the puzzle, the stage is set for a country house showdown like none other. There was nothing there for him, just bad memories and a past he could never undo, and what was the point anyway when France was laid out on the other side of the Channel like an exotic patchwork of sunflowers and grapevines and little cafes where he could sit all afternoon drinking local wine and bitter espressos and smoking Gitanes, where everyone would say, Bonjour, Jackson, except they would pronounce it 'zhaksong', and he would be happy.

This is a “compulsive page-turner that looks deep into the heart of sadness, cruelty, and loss,” which “ultimately grants her charming p. But Dr Hunter is so much more than an employer to Reggie who also adores the baby and who is to prove to be the most faithful of friends to Dr Hunter. Credits: Other credits include: A Single Shot (2013), Sweet Water (2013), Kendra (TV Series) (2012), Awake (TV series) (2012), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011). She won the Whitbread (now Costa) Book of the Year prize with her first novel, Behind the Scenes at the Museum.Still setting up the big story, we next meet four golfing chums, all members of the exclusive Belvidere Golf Club - the three muskateers and school chums, lawyer Steve Mellors, haulier Tommy Holroyd, and travel agent Andy Bagg, and a sort of hanger on, Vince Ives.

But then there was a train crash, and the action really took off, and I thought the rest of the book was terrific. And if she did drive away— somehow or other, not in her car, not in a rental — and she wasn’t driving down to see the aunt, then where was she going? The story is set in Yorkshire, in and around Bridlington, and from the blurb on the back cover we know it is about people trafficking. Jackson was going to French classes with a view to the day when he could sell up and move abroad and do whatever people did when they retired early.Atkinson delivers past and present mysteries both centering on the murder of prostitutes, one in current time, one in 1975—and of course the “semi-retired” Jackson Brodie, who is unable to not get involved in cases, help people, find himself in trouble, and be constantly followed by coinquidinks! I usually start off liking it all, but then start to despair as all the digressions get in the way of story telling. Atkinson has a unique way of blending very dark subject matter – missing persons, sex trafficking, modern slavery – with a sarcastic sense of humour and love of literature. Flush with money, Jackson has bought his retreat in France, and lives there with a pony that his daughter Marlee loves when she visits. And while it’s great to see Reggie again and spend time with Jackson, Crystal is a wonderful invention the reader will cheer for.

Louise and Jackson never slept together, but Louise was the one that he mistakenly allowed to get away. He has two part time assistants - beautiful Tatiana used in honey traps, and young Sam Tilling, eager to be a detective. Binky, the crazy cat lady, is a treat for her old colonial airs, and has an odd connection with the sisters and the secrets surrounding them. You currently have five novels worthy of a great marathon read, and each has an audiobook if you like British narrators in your ears. He witnesses an extreme case of road rage, and on a visit to an island, finds the body of a young woman, whom he can’t quite save from the tide.Jackson is essentially such a nice person going round, doing good and rescuing people quietly without fuss, and generally not only bending the law himself for the greater justice, but inspiring those around him to do the same. Atkinson gives Amelia a happy ending in this first novel but kills her off a couple of books later, of breast cancer. Atkinson continues her streak of writing interesting characters with empathetic Brodie at the heart. Meanwhile Jackson goes sight seeing to Cramond Island where he tries to pull a floating body out of the sea, but fails. Fans are rewarded with some past characters, Atkinson’s quiet and sly humor, an interweaving of the at-first-appearances unrelated incidents, complicated characters, and the inner workings of their minds.
