That’s what I’m planning to use it for in my Year 3 class, alongside reading lots and lots of the original myths! He lives in Brooklyn with his wife Crystal Skillman, and some mostly ungrateful cats, and loves hearing from readers at fred. Secondly, although the book description states: "This book tells the complete story of this legendary warrior, including information on the classical sources, his deification and cult, and his continuing popularity as a character in film, television and comic books," the last part of this sentence is only covered in a few not overtly long sidebars scattered throughout the book. While I think it would be a disservice to cut down the content of the myth, there were just too many words on the page—it took away from the images and made the book feel too heavy.

Kathryn Lasky and Mark Hess do a wonderful job sharing the story of Hercules, son of Zeus and all around bad ass. The Greek play author Euripides wrote a play about Eurystheus’ fear that Hercules’ children will seek revenge and kill him after the death of their father. Augeas, the mythical king of Elis, kept great stables that held 3,000 oxen and had not been cleaned for thirty years – until Hercules was assigned the job.The most difficult labor of all was getting the golden apples of the Hesperides, for Hercules did not know where to find them. Presentation: Hercules: The Man, The Myth, The Hero By Kathryn Lasky and illustrated by Mark Hess is an example of how a mentor text can be used to convey writing traits - in this case, presentation. The perfect way to extend children's knowledge around topics they are learning in class in an easy to access grown-up looking format.

Recommended for anyone who wants to learn about Greek mythology without diving into a dry, academic tome! It is markedly these lesser known accounts of Hercules that should have been expanded upon in one or two extra chapters to do them justice. Her novels have been translated into several languages and she has also contributed two titles (one ghostwritten for television presenter Fiona Phillips) to the UK’s Quick Reads Campaign, which provides easy-to-read books for adult emergent readers.I have to say that this book completely change my perspective of my favorite Disney movie because I didn't know Hera, Hercule's stepmother, was the villain instead of Hades.

He is the Director of the Center for Excellence in Preaching at Calvin Theological Seminary in Grand Rapids, MI.This would be a great book to use for readers that are older and understand a little bit more of Greek mythology. Sophie is overjoyed to discover Rose, a doll who has been in the family for two generations and is ""so old-fashioned that she seemed like a visitor from another time. He noted he saw hundreds of depictions of Hercules and thus his "art is a deliberate mixture of styles and periods". It then goes into the troubles Hercules faced, as he was growing up since he was half human and half god.The text strengths include beautiful illustrations and in thinking of the target audience I appreciated the direct approach the author takes in describing each stage of his life. These reader-favorite tiles are now updated for enhanced Common Core State Standards support, including discussion and writing prompts developed by a Common Core expert, an expanded introduction, bolded glossary words and dynamic new covers.
