This is another popular DIY option, but the sealant can fall through floorboard gaps if you don’t plug them first. An innovative gap filler for wooden floorboards that leaves the gap between the floorboards looking unfilled. Will a good quality underlay be enough to stop the draught through the boards or would it be better to fill the gaps first or put a membrane type cover down first?

For example the methods used to draught-proof floorboards under a carpet are different to those used to draught-proof stripped floorboards. Alternatives to the tube-like rolls, which are pushed into floorboard gaps, are thin V-shaped, one-size-fits-all, plastic lengths that spring apart when pushed into place using a credit card.Using StopGap to stop the cold air coming through the gaps in your draughty floorboards is the obvious next step. So - I have just collected up all the sleeping bags and duvets that we own, and spread them all across the living room floor where the floorboards are, two layers deep. I would tend to er on the side of caution as older houses were meant to breathe especially if you have damp problems which may not have been 100% cured. The floorboard gaps are uneven so they can start as narrow and then widen and then narrow again but I managed to fit wall to wall without breaking the rope by stretching it where needed.

The ingenious design plugs gaps of varying widths between 1mm and 8mm and won’t drop out when the boards shrink in hot weather. Few floorings will add as much personality and elegance to any room, with just a little loving care. It can also be compressed into floor gaps much smaller than its original profile, enabling you to fill even the smallest of gaps in floorboards.

As for the underlay and a cheap interim carpet, when I've spoken to carpet fitters (have got a number of quotes and chosen already) I've been told to absolutely hold off until decorating . Somewhere I've seen V-section seals for variable gaps between floorboards, they are pushed into place with a blunt blade or credit card etc. Featured on one of More4's property seasons, Sarah Beeny used DraughtEx to show viewers how to seal gaps in original wood floorboards. Someone had already butchered them to fit new heating pipes - all in plastic - no insulation - no pipe clips.Throughout the winter your central heating will be running and keeping the house warm and dry, keeping your floorboards free of moisture. We had gaps between our floorboards in a variety of sizes which made it a slightly trickier job, but it has been SO worth it.
