Bobby is a scary story for Halloween about a woman who tries to bring her drowned son back from the dead using black magic. This was the wonderful 'The Clifton House Mystery' from 1978 and starred Peter Sallis (Last of the Summer Wine) as the ghostbuster. The best of the Spooky episodes by a long way, this is the one that’s likely to have etched itself onto the memory of its impressionable viewers who would have been completely unprepared for just how strange this half hour was going to be. But I’m even more disturbed that this was broadcast before 5pm in a slot designed for children, because The Keeper was made for children, and watching it now it’s really hard to relate to that. My Name is Tommy is a short scary story about a young boy who comes home from school one day and notices something strange about his family.

Although I'm more than old enough to remember this series, I never saw it first time round so my review is not clouded by nostalgia. He then meets Caroline (Lucy Durham-Matthews) who claims to be from 1943 and who needs his help averting a terrible catastrophe. Brilliantly directed by John Woods and nudging the series into folk horror territory, The Keeper is the most sophisticated and densely packed of the stories, repeated viewings revealing layers of complexity that had previously eluded us. According to the chronicler Ralph of Coggeshall, a naked wild man, covered in hair, was caught in the nets of local fishermen. The series kicks off in impressive fashion, with the atmospheric ghost story "War Games With Caroline".

Was one of the stories about a young lad, who moves into a house and everytime he sees his reflection (in a mirror or puddle) he goes back in time (Victorian I think) and meets this girl who haunts him. Strange puddles of water begin appearing on the floor, mysterious toy figures, photographs in which the image uncannily seems to change, and a dream state resulting in time merging and slipping. It's a short little tale that uses many well worn tricks to build suspense - eerie acoustic instruments, predominantly a dulcimer, and a restless camera that's constantly circling and hovering just behind Peter and, particularly, Janet - but it must be remembered this is a show made for kids for whom many of these tricks of the trade would be new and also they are well worn because they work.
