Ship tiles are more important in two player games, and the person who is ahead for the bulk of the game has a large advantage. But farm and ship tiles don’t have a clear cut “one-die” benefit that the city and castle tiles do, so if you go for them exclusively you’ll end up placing fewer overall tiles which probably means fewer regions completed, which means fewer points from those regions.

But don’t ever get over-confident, even if someone is lagging behind, it isn’t difficult to catch up with the right numbers rolled! A worker permits you to manipulate the dice, meaning you can increase or decrease your roll depending on number of workers you use. A given knowledge tile may be more helpful at the beginning of the game and relatively useless at the end. Everything is done very professionally with this company and always lets you know every step of the process. Every part of the game’s mechanisms both make sense and exhibit some kind of genius mathematical symmetry.Assuming an even distribution of completed regions throughout the game, that nets 6 points per region, so board 1 has 72 potential round bonus points.

One random board per player: each player is given a single random duchy / estate among available ones. Around the board are six number areas when you can choose one of two randomised things to build, be it animal pens, castles, buildings, mines or upgrade powers. Similarly, grey mine tiles are incredibly valuable early in the game, as they provide a passive income of silver (each of which is worth half a die because two of them can purchase one tile from the center “black market”), but they’re quite useless in the last round because it’s too late to reasonably profit from the silver they give you. Castles of Burgundy holds a special place in our hearts, since it was one of the first Euro games in our collection. This is an immaculately designed game: the rules are clear and the basic game-play straight forward with scope for a variety of strategies.
