The majority of Cape Verdeans live in the United States and Western Europe, with the former hosting the largest overseas population at 500,000. Because of its excellent harbour, the city of Mindelo, located on the island of São Vicente, became an important commercial centre during the 19th century. The yellow horizontal stripe was for national well-being and culture, and the green horizontal stripe was for hope and agriculture.
