If you prefer to shoot in Av mode where you can control the Aperture of the lens (I recommend this mode) then you can open up to F2 and get some pretty special image quality. The programmable Control ring is a mixed bag, but it works great for ISO and for aperture in Manual mode.
S90 vs D-Lux 4 – Well, I love the D-Lux 4 and it has given me some of the best quality I have seen in a compact camera (next to the Sigma Dp2). This required that I remove the battery and replace it, as everything on the Canon S90 was otherwise unresponsive, including the power button. S.), it wasn't cheap, but at that time plenty of photographers were willing to shell out that money for a small serious camera they could take with them anywhere.
These fall into two groups: those content to shoot primarily in Auto mode, as we're all pretty used to doing with pocket cameras, and those willing and able to take their time with the very capable Canon S90. cm²) CCD sensor which has been designed with high sensitivity, rather than just higher megapixel count in mind, to make the most of the bright lens. The Canon S90's lens reminds me of one feature that hasn't come back to the Canon G-series, because its maximum aperture is f/2. I prefer to let the big front ring set exposure compensation (how dark or light is the next picture).
Battery life is expected to be a little lower than average, at approximately 220 shots, and 300 minutes of LCD on-time in Playback mode.

Finding a way of offering usable manual controls has proved surprisingly difficult for the normally ingenious designers of ultra compact cameras (although we've suggested a traditional 'aperture ring' like this on many occasions); this seemingly simple addition has a transformative effect on the utility of the S90's extensive manual controls. The image below should give a good impression of how the Canon S90 compares size-wise with Panasonic LX3. The amount of tweaking available is great for a compact camera and the control layout makes it reasonably fast and painless.
