When he died some weeks ago due to Covid-19 it is these little anecdotes you remember and so I decided to read the book. It only has two and a half glitchy memories, but it knows it was loved, which means something important to humans. of German submariners during WWII died on patrol, which makes Das Boot one of the very few surviving accounts of what that brutal life was like. There's a huge amount of 'know who you are and love being you' in this book and I can't get enough of it.Boot is aimed at the developing 7-9 market who want slightly more story from their books but not the rigour that Middle Grade Fiction can demand and of course the jump to no pictures.

The writing isn't anything spectacular but its gritty realism - Buchheim’s own experiences as a war correspondent aboard a German U-boat obviously helped - cannot be faulted. Boot also feels things he's not supposed to: he's a robot, but has love in his heart and determination to find Beth.
