The novel, like the previous, has an afterword by the author who comes across as modest and kind, and I think this really shines through im his work and the characters he creates. Presently a tyrant known as Ceska is now ruling Drenai, having killed the original rulers and displaced the heir.

The Year 1 and 2 classes have three half terms of weekly Beyond the Gate sessions across the year – enabling them to experience the site in different seasons. Forest School is a specialist approach to learning which has its origins from educational practices in Scandinavia where they embrace a culture of “friluftsliv” (outdoor life). The Joinings are horrifying werebeasts, made by the merging of man and animal, an ancient machine of the old times making the merging of two species possible, the result, a towering beast of such savagery that one alone becomes an army itself. He's just good at coming up with tortured yet heroic badasses, and there's a ton in this book; Tenaka Khan, unerringly deadly swordsman and outcast from two warring nations; Ananais the Golden, a once-handsome leader of men who was horribly disfigured and still maintains minimum-level Gemmell badassery content by wearing a creepy mask; Decado the Ice Killer, an unstoppable force of death who has given up the sword in exchange for peaceful living with the Thirty; and Rayvan, the brave rebel general and leader of imperiled refugees who worries deeply for her soldier sons.The first time we went out together was to the cinema - I remember the film even now - “The Manchurian Candidate” in which Laurence Hervey played the leading role. For serious SG-1 fans this is the only Stargate guide book you need … Without a doubt, this is the Stargate Bible.

It still held my attention most of the time and made me care deeply in bursts, so I'll give it a mediocre three stars.But from the moment she passes through the wrought iron gates, she starts to suspect she's made a mistake.

Important characters in this book are, the new hero in my view, Ananais, the new Earl of Bronze, Scaler, formerly known as Arvan, the double-dealing Nadir/Drenai leader of the Wolves, Tenaka Khan, the brave brothers Galand and Parsal, the formidable woman, Rayvan, the Thirty with especially in their midst, Decado, Katan, Acuas and Balan, but also the former King of the Nadir but now King Beyond the Gate, Ulric, will play an important role. The tones are an interesting mix – the bass has a nice character to it the guitars are very “1970’s Who” and the drums are mixed very alive – this all works to bring the piano into the fold and show off the musicianship and all works well with the often-falsetto vocals and very stylised backing vocals but it does contrast to other modern bands in the prog-rock style who might make heavier use of distortion, guitar effects and a tight, unified, bass-heavy mix. The King Beyond the Gate is the second fantasy novel by Gemmell in his Drenai series, originally published in 1985 (a year after my birth, if that). The Thirty and Earl of Bronze resurrect in spirit if not in form, with a barbaric King joining the fray. So let me preface the following review by saying that I haven't read anything beyond this book, so I assume that Gemmell gets better and better.There was a lot of shouting and a guard was struggling with a young man who was creating a great fuss.

The story appears to move in concentric circle from afar and purposefully spirals faster and closer to the climactic battle at the end, where magic and magical beings, foes and friends, must once again clash for victory, but this time not of territory but of souls. He’s also written numerous guides to television series as diverse as The X-Files, The Sweeney, Doctor Who and Roswell for Virgin Books.A few find themselves in a pivotal point in history and have to overcome past scars or weakness to overcome.
