This is different from a dry technical labelling of anatomy from a couple of positions prevalent in many artistic anatomy books. But if you already have a good foundation on figure drawing and anatomy, the depictions in this book will give a fresh perspective and good alternative to tightly-rendered, hyper-detailed anatomy books. Breaking the subject matter down into the underlying skeletal shapes, followed by the musculature, then skin and fat, and finally, the veins, Lauricella offers multiple approaches--from simple forms to complex renderings--and a plethora of positions and gestures are included to help you improve your drawing skills. In more than 1000 illustrations, the human body is shown from a new perspective—from bone structure to musculature, from anatomical detail to the body in motion.

What sets this apart from other anatomy or figure drawing books is its amount of invented drawing poses. This is a useful book for learning figure drawing, and this is actually one of many books under the Morpho series. Still, now that I’ve received the larger ones, I can see I’m going to need the smaller ones in my library.

In this book, Michel Lauricella presents both his artistic and systematic methods for drawing the human body--with drawing techniques from the ecorche (showing the musculature underneath the skin) to sketches of models in action. Michel Lauricella received his education at Paris's École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts (National School of Fine Arts). I draw as often as possible and nothing beats a real life model, but this is a good book for practising and working out where various muscles etc go. Rather than going the traditional route of memorizing a repertoire of poses, Lauricella instead stresses learning this small collection of forms, which can then be combined and shaped into the more complex and varied forms and postures we see in the living body. It focuses on the bone structures and muscles that create body shapes throughout various rages of motion. Beautiful drawing interesting poises I particularly like the drawing of the body with muscles and bone showing under neath. There's not much text but whenever there is, the text is insightful and talks about things you should know when it comes to drawing the said part.
