He could understand anyone going there from purely selfish motives, out of curiosity, for instance, but to mix oneself up in such things from a sense of obligation was sheer stupidity. It gives you a disgusting sticky feeling, and the queer thing is that, however carefully you sponge it away, when you've once discovered that your neck is soapy you feel sticky for the rest of the day. Attending a lecture with his wife Hilda at the “Left Book Club” meeting, he is horrified by the hate shown by the anti-fascist speaker, and bemused by the Marxist ramblings of the communists who have attended the meeting. The one serious defect in the novel is Orwell's attempt to be the voice of his narrator-protagonist.

Along with 'some sound in the traffic or the smell of horse dung or something,' these thoughts trigger Bowling's memory of his childhood as the son of an unambitious seed merchant in "Lower Binfield" near the River Thames. He uses the nostalgic recollections of a middle-aged man, to examine the decency of a past England and to express his fears about a future threatened by war and fascism. My weight isn't much over fourteen stone, and last time I measured round my waist it was either forty-eight or forty-nine, I forget which. The author of this novel, George Orwell, most famously known for his satires on society in Animal Farm and 1984, here composes what can be interpreted as the preliminary text in a trilogy which serves as a worthy political antecedent to these two great, significant literary pieces.At the book's opening, Bowling has a day off work to go to London to collect a new set of false teeth. This is a lovingly detailed picture of a world long gone; of a world which was disappearing by the time George Bowling was sharing his recollections, in 1938. If Orwell had ever divided his books between "entertainments" and serious works, as Graham Greene did, I assume he would have classified Coming Up for Air (1939) as the former, but it's still a fascinating window into the pre-war anxiety experienced by ordinary people in England. I can see the war that’s coming and I can see the after-war, the food-queues and the secret police and the loudspeakers telling you what to think. She gave me the little sidelong glance that she always gives me when she thinks I'm doing something extravagant.

The intense honesty and insight of his essays and non-fiction made Orwell one of the foremost social commentators of his age. Should he go along with this fiction, or should he come clean and say that he had been on a journey into his past—in which case he would also have to tell her about gambling on the horses, winning, and then squandering the cash? Nevertheless, the publisher did bring out the novel without demanding major changes and it was published on June 12, 1939. It was submitted to Victor Gollancz, who had an option on Orwell's next three novels, in spite of the 'cold treatment which [Orwell] had been given when Homage to Catalonia was rejected. Bowling hilariously personifies the self imposed entrapment of middle age - the marriage, parental responsibility, mortgage and lack of time for oneself. But in every one of those little stucco boxes there's some poor bastard who's never free except when he's fast asleep and dreaming that he's got the boss down the bottom of a well and is bunging lumps of coal at him. In its central movement, Coming Up For Air is an unembarrassedly affirmative recovery of early-century innocence:boyhood, family life and country rambling in the town of Lower Binfield. This is of vital importance to Orwell as he believed that ‘by retaining one’s childhood love of such things as trees, fishes, butterflies, and…toads, one makes a peaceful and decent future a little more probable’. Different again from what has gone before, we recognise George Bowling’s reactions, partly from experiences we may have had of our own, and also because the path has been so well prepared.
