About this deal

The characters were well laid out, the plot proceeded very well, and I thought that everything was explained well and wrapped up nicely. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. Undercover on Kiavahr, the planet Deliverance orbits, Omegon makes contact with members of the tech-guilds that ruled Kiavahr before the uprising led by Corax removed them from power. I guess it is time to take a break on the series, perhaps it will look interesting again after a while.

I also want to praise it for the way Gav Thorpe managed to plant the seeds of suspicion within the reader. The book bets heavily on exploring Corax's character and the effects of the Dropsite Massacre on the Raven Guard.Die Handlung knüpft endlich wieder an die direkten Nachwirkungen des Istvaan V Massakers an: Primark Corvus Corax und seine Raven Guard sind nur knapp der totalen Vernichtung entkommen. Unlike Graham McNeill, Gav Thorpe can have a shuttle landing without spending EIGHT PAGES describing its journey.

Despite some losses Corax is able to command his forces into the right spots at the right time to overload the Labyrinth's randomly-changing mechanism, jamming it open so the Primarch Project can be reached. The characters just don't quite drive the story enough, nor are they memorable on their own, though there is one in particular I should cover. Only one thing really bothered me here: For being a primarch that supposedly has exceptional patience (which one has to have to wage the type of war that the Raven Guard excel at), Corax seemed to be overly impetuous and prone to sudden outbursts. The Raptors are tested in battle in an assault on a Word Bearers station on Cruciax and prove effective if somewhat over-eager. There are some very strong points ranging from the infiltration work of the Alpha Legion through to the internal conflict of Corax and his captains, coupled with the stress of some of his sons surviving the Isstvan Massacre contrasted against those who were never there. The Alpha legionaries undercover in the Raven Guard disrupt the rebuilding process and damage the gene-tech Corax had uncovered. As the Horus Heresy divides the Imperium, Corax and his few remaining Raven Guard escape the massacre at Isstvan V.

Unfortunately, the "read every thought the character is having as they're having it" isn't so successful with most of the Ravenguard or Imperium characters. It is fitting for the Lord of Ravens in my eyes, and never done to the extent that it would reach into the comical. So, this time we pickup the story right at Isvtan, rescuing the Raven guard Primarch from a certain death. His Warhammer 40,000 repertoire further includes the Path of the Eldar series, the Horus Heresy audio dramas Raven's Flight and Honour to the Dead, and a multiplicity of short stories. It's a well traveled tale, starting in Istvaan, moving to Terra and finally to the Raven Guard's world of Deliverance. They know of the Raven Guard's gift from the Emperor, ahead of time, and wish to steal it for themselves. While it's true he lacks some of the depth of Lorgar for example, Corus does not display the tortured anguish every other Primarch has so far - which is actually a breath of fresh air. It's known as the Corvus suit and the beaked helmet is an Imperial in-joke that the Primarch appreciates, even if his men don't.

The intrigue part is pretty good and actually this is as much an Alpha Legion book as it is a Raven Guard book. They play a part early on and have a pretty great scene midway, but due to logistical reasons they only take part again at the very end. Piling up erratic behavior through the Alpha Legionaries and certain characters and ramping up the tension of the infiltration, he provided a magnificent red herring for readers to follow. The Raven Legion was one of the three legions that were in the Isstvan Dropsite Massacre during the Horus Heresy. The (very) good Warhammer books punch you in the face with unrelenting bolter fire then end before you realized that there wasn't that much story or what was wasn't actually very good. Corax's introduction is pretty interesting, particularly when juxtaposed against the recent massacre at Istvan. He has to get into contact with his father, who is on the planet Terra(Earth), fighting his own battles.
