About this deal

At times it felt almost claustrophobic as the intensity and stakes rose for the characters and I found myself desperate to get to the next page. The Reverend Mother, Chiara, painter Diana and Beatrice’s step-mother Ortolana were also some of the really strong and empowered characters that meet (either by their confidence, job or social position) and enjoyed getting to know each, as well as their small acts of rebellion along the way.

She demonstrates eloquent storytelling skills when evoking different eras and conditions in which our ancestral Eves lived. This is a stand-alone novel, and if you are a fan of the dark academia subculture, particularly within the literature, as well as a fan of novels such as The Handmaid’s Tale, I would recommend that you give this one a read.It was easy to become immersed in this small convent and to follow the women in their daily routines, feeling like you were a part of it.

and Esquire and in the late 1960s designed album covers for the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and Linda Ronstadt. La noche de carnaval, mientras todo el mundo en la localidad se divierte, llegan a las puertas del convento dos mujeres heridas que morirán pasadas unas horas no sin antes entregar a Beatrice un libro. Susannah York pops up as Bloom's oldest friend, but she is featured in some of director Claude Fournier's ill-advised fantasy scenes - one where a boy in a thong parades for both women, and others where the characters are outlined with white light. Vividly drawn characters and a totally transporting setting with timely undertones, like The Handmaid's Tale meets The Devil and the Dark Water. The political climate of the time in Italy was relatively familiar, having recently read other books set in Renaissance Florence, largely One Illumined Thread by Sally Colin-James (April 2023); The Brightest Star by Emma Harcourt (2022); and The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O'Farrell (2022).There’s also a grungy lushness to her prose that celebrates saliva, cervical and laryngeal mucus, buttocks… and fat. When Adam went to it he was afraid and trembled and fell down, but God in his mercy lifted him up, and then made this covenant with him.

There's so much mystery about this book and i loved the uncertainty of how the story would play out.

It’s a provocative corrective that will answer dozens of questions you’ve always had — and even more you never thought to ask. A tantalisingly supernatural thread develops, combining with personal courage and intrigue to make for a hugely satisfying read. A superbly rich tale, paced to perfection while addressing a whole range of issues from early feminism.

It's an education hidden in a tense, compelling, anger-driven narrative, Beatrice and Diana both knock-out characters. La historia trata varios temas, pero sobre todo el poder y la influencia que ha tenido la religión en la Alta Edad Media y cómo las mujeres eran vistas como portadoras del mal y el pecado. The empowering sense of friendship and sisterhood that developments between our Fiercely determined protagonist and the women at the convent was wonderfully wrought and really highlighted the complexities and challenges faced by women in a male dominated (and religiously patriarchal) society. La verdad que una pena porque creo que la idea es muy buena, pero el desarrollo no consigue sacarle partido, en mi opinión. For many years, she has shunned the company of her fellow sisters as she has learned that to find true solace and peace, she need look no further than manuscripts, missives, and parchments that can hold her attention much better than any person ever could. In hindsight I should have found out a little about the Voynich manuscript before reading this book.
