About this deal

This pen has only a very slight ball so the line feels and looks pretty crisp yet it is also smooth. It doesn't seem bothered what diet of ink it is fed, it just lays down ink reliably, never remember it either skipping or flooding. Do this carefully The feed looks different from the Carbon Desk Pen and there is an inner part (not seen here) of the feed that cannot be removed. For those that like to use watercolors after laying down links, it’s not as the wash will cause the lines to run. So this pen has a wider channel (the slit in the feed) than other pens so there is less chance of ink getting stuck while in the pen.

Another downside to this nib is that if I use Noodler’s bulletproof black in it, it doesn’t come out very black because the nib lays down the ink so thinly.Too thin for big fingers, too long to be taken seriously, there really is no need, even for an art pen to be so long. And it wasn't a pretty pen to begin with, because the section is a very light purple; that must have been some special edition, and surely a later production than yours. Ergonomic body - Combining the balance and nib shape of the quill pen with the convenience of a modern fountain pen for comfortable grip.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. I was surprised at how easily the ink flowed and the amount I could vary the line width with only a slight turn of the barrel. However, in the last few years I have been totally spoilt by the introduction of new, higher end pens with various gorgeous nibs etc, so armed with this knowledge, I have to (probably quite unfairly) knock a couple of points off.

There is no flex obviously, but it provides a smooth flow which is enjoyable for sketching and writing. Perhaps using the converter with a fountain-pen safe waterproof ink may offer a solution for watercolorists. Now I'm using Pelikan's Brilliant Black and although it's not as vibrant as Rotring's own ink, it still isn't bad. Again, I suspect this was to model the pen on dip pens or quills but that main body of the pen (the bit you hold) is a comfortable 10mm in diameter so it’s wide enough where it matters. It’s not super flexible but you will see some line variation when you draw normally with a little pressure. I like both, the DP-1000AN has crisp lines but a slightly scratchy nib and the Rotring has wider lines but a very smooth nib. I’m not sure if they were trying to emulate the look and feel of a dip pen but that’s what sprang to mind when I was using it.

When pressure is applied to the nib, the line can go about 3 times wider but it requires a lot of pressure.e. the pen-holder together with the nib) is longer than most conventional pens, which gives you more space to decide the position you are most comfortable with gripping the pen. It's surprisingly smooth (which is for me - beight a leftie - is a very good thing) and it's nicely wet.
