About this deal

In fact, if you show me images shot with this lens in good light, without telling me you took them with this lens, I'd think you have used a PRO lens (40-150mm PRO, or 300mm PRO). This minimum focusing distance is consistent throughout the zoom range and is not affected by the use of teleconverters.

The 100-400mm isn't all plastic, of course -- some of the barrel is clearly metal -- but the interior lens barrel that extends out as you zoom is plastic, as are the focus and zoom rings and the area that houses the panel of switches. From looking at pictures of both of those lens it appears the Panasonic is quite a bit smaller in size. OM System has released firmware updates for select camera models (E-M1X, E-M1 Mark III, E-M1 Mark II and E-M5 Mark III), primarily to add support for focus stacking with the 100-400mm. The optical system features a combination of four Extra-low Dispersion (ED) lenses for suppressing colour bleeding, two Super High Refractive Index (Super HR) lenses, and two HR (High Refractive Index) lenses for bright, clear imaging performance up to the edges of the image across the entire zoom range. It's hard to tell for certain about the lens's exact construction makeup, but my sense is when compared side-by-side with the 300mm f/4, that the 100-400mm utilizes more polycarbonate plastic in the barrel construction than the seemingly all-metal 300mm prime.

Furthermore, the Olympus 100-400mm has excellent close-focusing performance for such a long lens; you can focus very closely (down to just 1. The Olympus 100-400mm lens, being a non-Pro lens, can deliver crazy sharp images, with excellent contrast, rendering images that look ultra-realistic and true to life. But I was less happy with the images I got in even moderately low light, where the requirement for very high ISOs means that it’s difficult to capture much fine detail. I then tried the Hand Held High Resolution mode and, to my great surprise, the camera stayed still and, while the subject was moving slightly, the camera was able to align the shots perfectly! There are three control switches on the left side of the barrel and a 'Lock' switch on the right side, which prevents the lens from being extended. As a bird photographer, the prospect of a zoom lens that could give me a similar reach as my beloved M. Once more, it was a battle to keep ISOs in-check while still having enough shutter speed to prevent blurring, and it was even more difficult with the longer focal lengths combined with even slower apertures.
