About this deal

So this was an ideal opportunity to take a closer look at this type of lens and why most of us use a superzoom. Nikon D810, Nikon 200-500mm VR at 500mm and Nikon TC-14E III, wide-open at f/8 at 1/1,000 hand-held at Auto ISO 1,100. On my D1 (1999), D2Hs (2005), D70 (2004) and D200 (2005) and D40 (2006), everything works great, except that it only shoots at f/5. aperture provides reliable and smooth speed and control throughout the depth of field across the whole zoom range.

I'm happy at maximum magnification at 320 of a second panning and still get a lot of good images at lower shutter speeds, 320 is my banker.

We have seen this with the Tamron and Sigma 150-600mm lenses, which can be a bit of a gamble in terms of sample variation. Again sorry didn't know that, I also have the 200-500 and it's slow at focusing kind of thought the 200-600 would probably be the same. To maximize the Nikon 200-500’s autofocus capabilities, I recommend limiting your minimum focusing distance and only switching back to the full range when your subject is close enough. Lens sharpness is a crucial aspect of wildlife photography, often becoming the subject of passionate debates. My other slight frustration with the handling was that the focus ring is nearer the camera body than the zoom ring, the opposite of the telephoto lenses I generally use, and not in an optimal place for someone who manually tweaks focus a lot, as it’s behind the center of gravity point.

You can turn it and pull it off the back of the lens, however big screw heads poking out of the lens are not comfortable for hand-holding. The optical design incorporates three extra-low dispersion glass elements to reduce chromatic aberrations and distortions for increased sharpness and color accuracy. When you consider the cost, ease of use, portability and image quality, a modern superzoom is a more convenient option than a prime for the most part.

I've tried this lens on numerous Nikon cameras from my 1970s F2AS through today's D810, and it works great on all of them. So you need a heathy disposable income to justify a prime if motorsport photography is just a hobby.

Even during high-speed continuous shooting, stable AE control is achieved with the adoption of an electromagnetic diaphragm mechanism.Oddly the big hood is packed in a separate section on top of the lens, making the top five or six inches of the box (130mm) above the gold band mostly air.

It's also big and heavy, so get this 200-500 for airshows, birds, surveillance, intelligence gathering, sunsets and other long-range uses, and you'll still need your regular telephoto along with it. It's swell for distant wildlife and sports, but not instantaneous like the world's best 100-400mm f/4 L IS II. This proves especially useful in situations where movement is limited, such as when working from a hide or with subjects that are sensitive to movement. Please refer to our FAQs and contact info page for the most commonly asked questions that we receive. Wider aperture: As a fixed f/4 lens, the 300mm lets in 1 more stop (or double the amount) of light as the Nikon 200-500, helping to produce more pleasing out-of-focus backgrounds. What I like about the placement of the focus ring, is that it is located at the back of the lens, which is an advantage when hand-holding the lens, since you never actually touch the focus ring in the process. This prevents your camera from cycling through its entire focusing range, saving precious milliseconds to increase your chances of getting the perfect shot.
