About this deal

However, the views of previous generations of law-makers do not die with the law-makers; the record of those views lives on and has the potential to influence the views of the current generation.

In this hypothetical, the fact that the Stanleys have no income is not relevant, because this particular rule doesn’t require us to look at income. In the first section, the letters addressed the exact kind of questions that I myself was asking in the run up to the university application process: “why law? It rewards people who are good at teaching themselves, since that is what most lawyers spend their careers doing. Apparently, talking to initial law students - it also is a helpful book to aid you along with your course! During law school, she was Note Editor of the Arizona Law Review, a member of the National Moot Court Team, and the winner of the Jenckes Advocacy Competition.Regardless, this book generally gives an international law knowledge except for a few minor sections. Eventually, this will give you insight into the thinking of your clients, your adversaries, the judge and jury.

After watching the process for many years, in many different places, I’ve observed that law school involves three circles: the education that takes place within you, the education you share with your peers, and the education you experience with the faculty. The only negative aspect if this book would be that some of its chapters are mainly directed towards UK law students which could be penalising for someone who would like to study somewhere else. Even if you don’t get caught up in the competition, you will need to address it when you observe it in others. And if you are not already besotted with the exhilaration of studying law for the next three years, reading Letters to a Law Student will certainly have you feeling that way! Finally, I thought that Mcbride did repeat himself multiple times when I think it could have been more concise and still have gotten his point across perfectly! This helped me learn better and his simple wording and explanations truely left me learning everything he was trying to teach. In law school, we expect you to teach yourself the meaning of information, and more importantly, its function, for use in situations you haven’t yet experienced. Instead of just reading and memorizing, you need to start digging for these rules of law and extracting them from the text.

In every legal question, we are asking essentially the same question: “How do we get to this point from where we were previously?

Not too dissimilar to ‘Under the Wigg’, ‘Jeremy Hutchinsons Case Histories’ is an enthralling read citing all the major cases Hutchinson advocated on. Assimilated together the letters form a collection of essential advice, guidance and words of wisdom given throughout the significant period from first thinking about becoming a law student, through to embarking on university applications, obtaining a good law degree and subsequently, thinking about becoming a lawyer. Some claim Sumption to be the brightest man in the whole of the United Kingdom, and this is possibly proved to be the case in his short book ‘Trials of the State’, which is based upon the content of his ‘Reith Lectures’ for the BBC. The question of what sort of society we should live in is a very large and difficult one, and no one judge (or, indeed, any human being) can claim a monopoly of wisdom on this subject.

It is well written, readable and wholly absorbing…My only regret is that this book of letters was not available to me when I was a student. If they haven’t, then what does the state of conversation indicate at the moment about how our law-makers might resolve this issue? This is not only for the benefit of the student, but also on behalf of the profession, and the clients who will be served by that future lawyer. Really helpful and useful book actually, very factual therefore hard to read at times yet it allowed me to see whether a law degree was right for me or not and it has actually convinced me along with other things that law is something that I want to venture into.
