The Robe was last worn by King George VI in 1937, and was conserved and prepared by Ede and Ravescroft. Dressed in his finery in the iconic portrait by Hans Holbein the Younger, destroyed by fire in 1698 but still widely known due to the multiple copies made and disseminated at the time, Henry VIII was determined to send out the message that he was a powerful king, entirely the equal to his European contemporaries. Additionally, symbolic shapes cover the surface of the Imperial Mantle, including roses, thistles, shamrocks, crowns, eagles, and fleurs-de-lis. He has remained loyal to certain makers for years, but around 30 years ago he began insisting that to earn his Royal Warrant they had to conform to specific environmental requirements.

Traditionally, this piece is made anew for each coronation, but Charles has instead chosen to reuse the same Sword Belt that his grandfather, George VI, wore during his 1937 ceremony. With a tight guest list to the first coronation in 70 years, the occasion gives attendees more reasons to show up in style. The first accessory we have on our list is great for those who want a quick and easy piece to wear for their upcoming party. Initially only worn by members of the Royal Family, it was gradually adopted by senior attendants in the royal household, and by the aristocracy. The screen’s four oak poles are made from a windblown oak from the Windsor Estate, planted in 1765, and are topped with two gilded bronze eagles. The wildflower decorations denote ‘Their Majesties’ affection for nature and the British countryside,’ while the ‘front hem area of the underskirt and the cuffs of each sleeve are embroidered with the floral emblems of the four nations of the United Kingdom (rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock).
Queen Camilla’s Coronation Dress was designed by Bruce Oldfield and features silver and gold embroidered floral designs, representing Their Majesties’ affection for nature and the British countryside, intertwined with celebratory bunting. During the anointment, King Charles wore the anointing gown (Colobium Sindonis, "shroud tunic in latin")–a plain white gown that is free from decoration.
