About this deal

Please note that this service is NOT insured, therefore if purchasers require further cover, then they must arrange this themselves. As ever, I tend at these moments to feel most sympathy for all those talented and well-meaning folk who work for the brand.

Getting refused the license then blatantly copying the film version when you know you should have a license? And even if Hornby does decide to change their mind it would be easy and just say they are producing the Lion loco and the rest of the model moved around to say railroad. It’s a darn shame a greedy media group have the final say on an item that would probably sell quite well. An awful lot of the complaints about Hornby copying people are very dubious as are complaints from people who don't understand the Tier System for retailers.

I was waiting for January with excitement as Hornby had ’let the cat out of the bag’ that they would be producing a model of this. Do you think Hornby has finally come up against someone and a studio that’s willing to defend their copyright? I think a Buster set would get mired in the debate on the real robbers treatment of the driver though. i’ll believe it when I see evidence of real investment into it… to be fair to Hornby I think a couple of models from a few companies are looking aspirational at the moment… thing is to get money you need results. As for the Lion no interest for me, it just annoys me that they are late for every product even when there isn't a pandemic so why waste the effort trying to beat someone else.it is very poor form though, and there certainly has been a ‘nasty’ side to Hornby in recent years trying to drive out smaller manufacturers. They've already got things such as the four- and six-wheeled coaches, which are in competition with Hattons, they've got their Terriers, which are in competition with Rails of Sheffield, and then they've got this - a set featuring what is probably the most specific and niche combination of engine and train you could ever have thought of.

And, having spent development money up front before thinking to check the license situation, Hornby could get their Lion to market before Rapido’s TT. There are plenty enough models that they could make, they could even make the ones promised in 2021 and 2020 catalogues, without having to copy someone else.My only observation is that if you view Rapido's "reply" to Hornby's announcement, the use of clips from the Film are so well edited into Rapido's production and are sanctioned by Studio Canal, the way it has been written and presented all suggest that in all but name it is a Studio Canal production. Hornby have today released the statement below regarding their proposed 'Trains on Film' train packs. Smacks of trying to damage the competition rather than doing what’s right for the hobby to me but I’m interested in what you all think? Rapido publicly announced shortly after that they are making Lion and the Titfield Thunderbolt train packs (under licence from Studio Canal) for the 70th Anniversary of the film and had begun work on CAD etc.

The only similarity I know for certain was the fact that the other set came with the same engine, but the rights to the film name (which I can't remember right now) may also have been owned by Studiocanal? Whether it's the first shot or Hornby have already been served with a cease and desist notice only Hornby and Studio Canal know. So I think the proverbial jury will be out as to whether this will be a good move - Lion is a very niche interest product to have 2 competing products and with Hornby hurting their chances by playing games with their retailers. So they blast a load of their limited resources just to get it out before their competitor and generally it is not as good. This time however, Hornby have been caught with their pants down as they didn’t have the image rights for the model, as it was a character in a movie, something that they really should have done their due diligence about…. There was even an argument between Simon Kohler and the people at Rails of Sheffield that was captured in the TV programme ‘Hornby:A Model World’ over the release of their Terrier model a few years ago. Boldly, and perhaps against the grain I'd predict that this will be a good move for Hornby once all the pitchforks have been put down. uk (powered by TrainSplit) helps support the running of the forum with every ticket purchase, and we can sell Great British Rail Sale fares!
