You may accuse me of over-glamorizing jazz, or the artistic position of an African American woman in the 1950s. They were invented originally in red and blue for the comfort of people wearing chain mail mini-skirts, laying siege to Jerusalem (and they were men). The dramatic, driving ‘No Cure For A Common Christmas’ is further evidence of the group’s talent for crafting lovelorn dance music; of all the songs compiled here, it’s the one you’re most likely to listen to in mid-July. To a bookish boy in a Boston suburb in the mid-1970s, the lyrics of Cole Porter came as something of a revelation. There were at least 150 collective pages of filler that could easily have been omitted, but I was so engrossed in the story and eager to know what happened next that I was able to skim right through them without too much difficulty.

It's been conniptions and collywobbles all around since Mr Underwood misplaced some important 'artistic' documents. Hardened, remote, mysterious, Bogart in many ways represented a persona antithetical to Porter’s smooth, erudite glamour; but for my father, Bogart was just another version of urban style. I liked the stars of the narrative, like Annie and Damon, but I don't understand the need for other POVs from insignificant players in the fictional work.His was an urbane and sophisticated capital, where one’s budget was unlimited, the hour was eternally twilight, and the sights to be seen included all things delightful, delicious and delovely. If, through these four sides of vinyl, I was receiving an urbane sensibility from Porter and a will for experience from Fitzgerald, I was also receiving a lasting gift from my father.
