About this deal

almost the same as its predecessor and smaller in width and depth than the Galaxy Note 2, which is impressive considering this is the first of the Note series to sport a metal frame. It looks fairly convincing, even more so than it did on last year’s model, but it doesn’t feel like real leather and it detracts from the overall look and feel of the handset.

Thank you for the comparison to the iPhone 6+ too (as natural a comparison as that is) because I've been wondering if I would be happier with it versus my Note 4. In terms of design the new model is very close to its predecessor, the Galaxy Note 3, including a similar faux-leather material on the back cover.

We would have preferred it if it was a bit thinner and lighter, not to mention water-resistant, but oh well, maybe next time. The S-View cover, a horizontal flip case with preview window, shares the functionality of the predecessor's, except the ability to create Action Memos (digital post-it notes) without unfolding the cover. If you can stomach the cost and can live with the software quirks, the Note 4 is a phone that deservedly earns that Recommended badge. Of course, there isn't nearly enough space inside the Note 4 for that kind of a pen, so Samsung has had to do with what's possible at this time. Most will likely use it a couple of times and then safely leave it in the slot, but scribbling on notes could be useful for some.

Like the predecessors, the Note 4 also includes a stylus pen, branded S-Pen, incorporated into the design. Samsung has tried to make the removable plastic cover feel more premium by giving it a leather effect finish, but there's still no fooling your hand with that unmistakable texture. Some shuffling of the Note 4 in the hand is required to get your fingers in the right position to reach these during one handed use, and you'll need to be careful not to drop it. It's not the same screen though, as Samsung has given the Galaxy Note 4 a hefty resolution boost - but more on that on the next page.

I'm intrigued that the Panasonic CM1 with the 1" sensor isn't counted as an Android smartphone that shoots raw. Being of the swipe type, the Galaxy Note 4's scanner works differently from that of the Apple iPhone 6 and 5s, as you actually have to slide your finger down over the home button/sensor for it to read your fingerprint.

It works as advertised, but is more novelty than useful feature – heart rate monitors will only be useful when they are continually monitoring a user’s heart rate to see real changes, rather than ad hoc measurements. Samsung isn't in too big a trouble just yet, but profits just can't keep climbing forever and the company needs the Galaxy Note 4 to become a success in a way the Galaxy S5 couldn't.

The new multitasking interface merges the Galaxy Note 3's “S-Pen window” feature and the split-screen feature known from the Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S5, into one feature. We use industry standard tests to compare features properly and we use the phone as our main device over the review period. In my experience (and I don't seem to have DPR's misalignment problem), it is as perfect as a smartphone can be in every respect except that, WHICH COULD BE EASILY FIXED IN SOFTWARE. The latter is by the camera lens and works well if you just want a general idea, but isn’t accurate enough for medical readings.
