I've just finished reading this to my 5 year old son, I tried to read it to him before but only had a small, black and white illustrated, version which I've had for about 30 years. Born over 100 years ago Dahl is still read and enjoyed today by millions around the world, he even has Roald Dahl Story Day, an annual celebration of his stories! Mr Fox is a very clever fox - every evening he creeps down into the valley and helps himself to food from the nearby farms.

We all know that foxes are perceived to be shy and cunning creatures and in Fantastic Mr Fox he shows just how cunning he can be when he outwits three greedy, mean and cruel farmers who want to kill him! The Foxes' four children are replaced by Ash, a small and insecure fox who seeks his father's approval and Mrs. Roald Dahl at his best - an oft overlooked story (at least until the film adaptation) this is lots of fun.

Little do they know, the fox they want to deal with is far too clever for them, digs a tunnel right to their farms, steals their food and comes back unharmed (the only part harmed is his tail which was shot off by the brutes).Here, they are nearly caught by Bean's servant Mabel and have an unpleasant confrontation with the cellar's resident, Rat. At the table, Mr Fox invites everyone to live in a secret underground neighbourhood with him and his family, where he will hunt on their behalf daily and where none of them will need to worry about the farmers anymore. Fox is trying to save his family, he must be very clever indeed and come up with a fantastic plan - which he does.

So when they declare war on Mr Fox, who has been stealing their chickens and cider to feed the starving animals on the hillside, they mean business!
